Default Rhone River Cruise in Provence France

We will be aboard Le Phenicien (barge) on the Rhone River in southern France this July. It is a "Wine Cruise" in Provence. Has anyone ever been on this cruise/barge? Any comments on it?
Thanks, Budcat

Budcat ~ we weren't on a barge trip but did take the Viking Rhone river cruise that actually began in Chalon on the Saone river and switched to the Rhone river in Lyon.

First river cruise and we thought it fantastic!!! Went to wine tastings in Chalon and Tran Hermitage. End of cruise we stayed 2 nights in Avignona nd had a semi-private (8 people) all-day wine tasting tour (4 vineyards + lunch) in Chateauneuf-du-pape that was the hightlight of any trip!!!

So I can't answer any specific questions about your cruise but have been in the area and can highly recommend it.

Have a great trip!!

Can you post who you booked your private tour with? We found great private tour guides for our Mediterranean cruise on these boards a few years ago. Thanks!

Hi Yvie ~ we booked Olivier Hickman and thought he was fabulous! Spoke perfect English - I think his father is English, his mother French. He and his family (wife, two sons) live in the Chateauneuf-du-pape area, so he's a "local" now.

He's extremely knowledgeable but has a good down-to-earth personality. DH really knows wine while I just drink it! But Olivier was great with each of us and the others in our group. He could answer any question without making anyone (me!) feel stupid!! I would recommend him to anyone!!

His site is: Presentation of Olivier

Hi Peg,
Just out of curiousity, did you fly into Lyon, Paris, or other? We're thinking of this cruise in 2014 and I'm trying to figure out the best itinerary. Also, I noticed Viking has cruises that go both downstream (what you did) and upstream starting at Avignon - any advantages to one over the other?
Thanks!

SDBeachLovers ~ we flew into Paris and were there for 4 days pre-cruise - it was our first time in that fabulous city and we just never had near enough time! Plan to go back in 2014 before or after Bordeaux cruise.

Post cruise we spent 2 days in Avignon and 4 days in Nice.

As far as up or down stream I guess you could get a lot of opinions about that! We chose north to south (downstream, I think!) mainly because I reasoned that it'd be better to see Paris earlier in October and then travel south. Interestingly, we hit a Minstral Wind in Avignon and it was colder than Paris! But Nice and the Riviera were warmer.

The Saone and Rhone rivers are full of locks and low bridges. We enjoyed the locks - they were SO interesting passing through them! And the bridges were also interesting - a few times a crew member would come up on the top deck to tell us that we all had to sit and sure enough - we'd go under a low bridge that you could almost touch the bottom of!! But don't get me wrong, it wasn't often and only took a few minutes so really didn't disrupt our fun at all. Once I even saw a sign closing the stairs to the top deck because of a low bridge - but again it wasn't often.

Don't know if you've run into my slide shows on other posts - sorry if this is a repeat but to me a picture takes the place of a thousand words!

We started a cruise in Lyon a few weeks ago but started by flying to Geneva. Airfare was cheaper to Geneva than Lyon and the train was only 35E each first class for 90 minute trip to Lyon. Spent 2 nights in Geneva and 4 in Lyon before the cruise. Another alternative
