We are going on the Embera Village tour and would like to take the kids some things. Can someone suggest items to take. I am also wondering approx how many kids there are at the village.

I was on this shore trip approx two weeks ago. I took school supplies, pencils, etc. lightweight items that fit into my bags.

The Embera community leaders do not want the kids to become beggars, so they prefer you don't hand out things to the kids. However, books in Spanish, notebooks, pencils, school supplies are urgently needed. It's best to ask the chief who the teacher is and give them either to the teacher or the chief. Some villages may have a Peace Corps worker and that's a good person to ask as well.
If you've ever done the Amazon and stopped at Boca da Valeria you see what happens when the kids are trained by tourists to be beggars. The kids swarm all over the guests when they go ashore, often pushing, shoving and grabbing. Not a good scene. Wisely the Embera community wants to train their children to be gracious hosts. Regards, Richard If you really want to help the families buy the craft items they sell. That's helping and respecting the dignity of the Indigenous community. |
