Yes, very easy with public bus and that is what we did this pass February.

From the train station, we took bus #686 one block away to Echo Point and Scenic World and back. Here is the link to the Blue Mountain Bus website for schedules: http://www.bmbc.com.au/public-timetables

The bus run every 30 minutes and accepts the same Opal card we used for the train from Sydney.

Another alternative is to take the train from Sydney up to Katoomba and walk to Echo Point (3 sisters) as the others posters have advised.

Then you could take a local bus to Springwood (bus 690K) which goes through some of the little towns and villages, and catch the train from Springwood (or any other station on the way) back to Sydney.

Marion, it's about 3 km from the station to Echo Point and a good 40 minute walk.

There is so much more to the Blue Mountains than just Katoomba and its worn out path to the 3 Sisters at Echo Point or Scenic World which in my view is just a tourist trap.

The restaurant/cafe at Scenic World is pathetic.

Can you get to Echo Point without using the HoHo or Trolley bus, yes, use the local 686 bus or walk 40 minutes. Then what? If you enjoy walking, then take some of the well marked paths along the cliff faces but you do need transport such as the HoHo to get you back to Katoomba if you elect to take one of the longer walks. You can also walk from Echo Point to the Cable Way halfway to Scenic World.

The train can get you to some of the quaint towns in the upper blue mtns such as Blackheath or Wentworth Falls. My choice would be to hire a car so you have much more flexibility to get to these places. The views from Govetts Leap at Blackheath are far superior to those at Echo Point.

The historic Hydro Majestic Hotel at Medlow Bath has been completely refurbished and is now a very popular place to visit for lunch or overnight at.

Taxis in Katoomba are few and far between.

We took the train from Sydney to Katoomba and used the Opal card. Cost was $15.00 each. Once we arrived in Katoomba, we walked the short distance to the bus stop for 686. We then were able to use our Opal card (this transportation was also included in the $15.00 charge pp). We got off at the Scenic World stop. We bought the unlimited pass. We then took the skyrail across the gorge. We then took the hike to go see the waterfall that was a 15 minute walk. We continued to walk down the path for 2 hours until we arrived at the scenic railway. We rode that up, then back down. Was wanting to ride the cable car up the mountain, but the line was really long. We then walked back over to were the train ride was and took it back up the mountain. We then caught the bus back to Katoomba to catch the train back to Sydney. We had a wonderful day! It was so easy and we feel we saw the Blue Mountains from great views!

The scenic railway is actually better than the cable car IMHO.
