It's okay to not be a sailor, lots of other things you can do to participate, including just sit there. But it is a sail boat race between 2 boats, not a sailing cruise tour of the bay. Go. Have fun.:)

Hubby and I did it our last time in St Maarten. So much fun! I was a "winch wench" and he was a "primary grinder". You can choose your role based on how much work you want to do. We were the only Canadians on the "American " boat but still had a blast racing against the two Canadian sailboats. A great experience!

It's a great excursion and has been around for a VERY long time.

We took our children a couple of times when they were teens.

Now they are taking our teen grandchildren. :)

An excursion being passed down thru the generations...I can't think of a better testimonial! This isn't something that I've ever considered before but it is only a few hours and seems like it will be a real blast. I had read the reviews on the Carnival website but I was interested in hearing from people who had actually tried it. I appreciate all the responses I've received!

I highly recommend it. Jobs for the in-shape and not-so-in-shape participants. http://www.tampabay.com/features/travel/americas-cup-12-metre-challenge-turns-swabbies-to-sailors/2120936 Sailing experience not required. In fact, that's the whole purpose, so non-sailiors can get a taste.

We did this excursion in 2015. It was awesome. We are heading back this summer, however I checked Carnival's website, and its not listed under the excursions. Is it still active?
We had it booked for next month. Their website said they were decimated by the hurricanebut had new boats coming. We were just notified that the excursion was cancelled and went in the ship's excursion planner and saw it was no longer listed. I assume they are not up and running yet but very probably will be by summer. Keep checking. Their website is 12 Metre Yacht Challenge.

Looks like they will begin sailing again on Oct 17. I do not see a weight limit listed. I would contact them to verify, if you have concerns. Here is a link to their website with contact information:

Thanks. I should clarify that we would be doing it through Celebrity cruises; it looks like cruise passengers have to book through the cruise line and I wondered if Celebrity has a limit--they seem to have limits when the actual provider doesn't. The Celebrity site is down for maintenance.

I can confirm that they are back in business, as the excursion is offered for our upcoming cruise in December.

As a longtime sailor and huge fan of the 12 meter America's cup boats, it was a great experience for me when I did this on a cruise some years back. But you do not need to be a sailor or have ever sailed before. And I do not think anyone except perhaps the most sensitive person would have trouble with sea-sickness, as the sailboat "race" is done in the confined waters of the harbor, not out in the open ocean.

My only disappointment was that there was no opportunity for any helm time for those on the "crew" with sailing experience - that would have been a great thrill.

None the less, if you are interested at all in a very different cruise excursion experience, I'd highly recommend this excursion.
