chateau d'lf and frioul island

has anyone taken the ferries to see them? any tips? how far is the walk to saint esteve from where the ferry lets you off on frioul island?

Yes, we have taken the ferry over to Chateau d'If. The boats leave from a pier that is close to where cruise line shuttles drop passengers (who take the shuttle into town). On the island you have to make your own decision about how much walking (and how many steps) you want to handle. That being said, this would not be a good activity for anyone with severe mobility difficulties as there are a fair number of steps (and some uneven spots) in the castle and around the island.

Actually, Chateau d'If is located on one of the 4 islands of the Frioul Archipelago) And we have not been to any of the other islands...and also not sure there is much to attract tourists on the other islands.

The Chateau is well worth a visit and is great fun. I don't recall it being very far from the jetty at all however there are steps. The crossing over doesn't take long - recommended.
