We would like to do the CW and tour the Breakers and the Elms on our own. We are in Newport on Sunday, Sept 28th and see that the bus doesn't start until 10:12am. Our time in port is 7am-5pm, although I realize this is a tender port. We would also like to grab something local to eat. What is our best plan of attack? Is all of this even possible? We are fine with cabs or the bus, whichever gets us the best results to see what we want to see.
Thanks for you help!

The Breakers opens at 9 am; the others open at 10 . It should take about an hour or so to do the audio tour at the Breakers.
Personally I can only tour one mansion per day before I get visual and factual overload.
I also recommend leaving time enough to wander around the town to look at some of the historic architecture, if you like that sort of thing.

Not sure what schedule you are looking at, but I see a first bus time at 9:40 on the outbound Sunday/Holiday schedule.

Cliff Walk is under repair from hurricane damage but by 9/28 the repairs should be done. I have been unable to find an update to the repairs.

Since you are OK taking a taxi, this is how I suggest you do it. Get off the cruise ship as early as possible. As soon as you are ashore, do a quick look around for a taxi, but the land where the tender dock is located will be full of tour buses. Walk one block north on Americas Cup Ave until you reach the Newport Gateway Center where you can catch bus or taxi.

Hire a taxi to take you to the start of CW which is on Memorial Blvd. Start your walk there. Eventually, you will pass behind the Breakers. You'll have 2 choices - continue walking on CW, but you will have to retrace your steps to see the Breakers, or exit CW and tour the Breakers.

Once done at the Breakers, you'll have 2 more choices - reenter CW and continue walking or walk or bus to the Elms. If you decide to walk on CW, know where the exits are located. From the exit, walk to Bellevue Ave which is a bus route and take an inbound bus to the Elms which is on Bellevue Ave.

When done at the Elms, walk or bus to Newport center and select a restaurant for a late lunch.

Thank you so much! I had an old schedule I guess because your link clearly shows the times you mention. I am truly appreciative of your insignt and suggestions. In 2006, we went to Alaska and did all of our excursions on our own with the help of cc. I haven't been back on since then and can't remember my old log in so I had to start over as a new person :o.

There is so much to see in Newport, it's one of my favorite places! We live about an hour from there so can visit anytime. Just went there about 3 weeks ago and toured Rosecliff Mansion. This was our 4th mansion and they are all nice to visit. We started with The Breakers (this is the one everyone recommends for 1st visit). Your mouth will drop when you see it! They give you headsets and you can tour at your own pace. It usually takes about 1 hr. but if you want you can spend additional time listening to the exhibits by pressing the button for the exhibit on your headset.

Here is a shuttle company in Newport that you can contact for info.:

http://www.cozytrans.com/
Website says they have car rentals. You can ask about a taxi tour also.

Hertz car rental located downtown Newport:
Hertz Car Rental
105 Broadway
Newport (401)846-1645

You could have a cab pick u up at port and drive you around to sightsee.
There is a hop on/off harbor shuttle but it may be closed on Oct. 19th.

(says open til Columbus Day weekend) but who knows they could extend if weather is nice.

This would be a nice possibility for you:

"Our trolley tours depart from the Visitor Information Center, 23 America’s Cup Avenue in Newport. Tickets are sold at the ticket counter inside the Center. The Center is open 9:00 – 5:00 seven days a week and is located one block north of the cruise ship tender landing." You would be tendered in from Royal to Visitor's Center.

Further info on website. You could also arrange a private trolley tour for a group and have exact times for departures and returns. You could post on your Roll Call and see how many might be interested. This would be a nice solution.

Some other suggestions:
Visit the oldest synagogue in the country - has an interesting history.

Walk the Cliff Walk - breathtaking!

TA reviews are good on this tour. You could self-guide or take the guided tour.

Here is something that is definitely different for you to do. You can make your own glass ornament and bring (they will ship it) home as your souvenir. You could make a Christmas ornament which would be a nice souvenir.

So you see, much to do there if you want!

You will love Newport - it's a great place to visit. Don't forget to try a lobster roll! Great restaurants there.

This might be fun, weather permitting: mimosa morning sail

Feel free to ask for any additional assistance. Maybe I'll meet you at your ship. LOL

BTW, we did a Caribbean cruise on Royal early April. Loved the ship! Edited by cruisingmimi

We are in Newport sun 10/19 and debating on ship excursion to Breakers and another mansion and cliff walk. It is a tender port 7-5. Is this do-able on our own? Also want to see INSIDE the properties, not just tromp around the grounds!

The tour of a mansion IS inside the building. You are free to wander the grounds before or after your visit inside. The Cliff Walk runs behind many of the mansions, along the ocean. You can taxi or bus to get to these places. Directions are specified previously in this thread. Personally, I get visual overload trying to see more than one mansion in a single day.

What you are considering is very easy to do on your own for a lot cheaper than the cruise line.

You can simply take the trolley to where the cliff walk begins. along the walk you will pass by the Breakers as well as several other mansions. You want to tour it, just go round to the entrance and pay your admission and stay as long as you want. When finished, back to the Cliff Walk.

Cheers

The lawns of the mansions are fenced off from the Cliff Walk. "Go round to the entrance" usually involves finding one of the infrequent streets that runs down to the walk, following it back up to Bellevue where most of the mansion entrances are, and walking back however far to the mansion you want.

Yes, you are correct that there are only certain access points to the cliff walk. BUT there is one right at the Breakers. And yes, you walk down the block and around the corner and viola, you are right at the entrance to the Breakers.

Cheers

We are in Newport Oct 5 and would like to visit the Green Animals topiary gardens in Portsmith. Do you know if at that time of year it would be worth the trip and should we rent a car or does public transportation go there? OR - are there gardens at the mansions that are interesting at that time of year?

does Magic bus # 67 take you to the Illustration Museum?

Btw ..since one of my ancestors was Roger Williams, the original gov. of Rhode Island, I'm interested if there any memorials/museums dedicated to him?

This site has ben a wealth of info! Thanks!

Ann,

"Did you know that Roger Williams and his wife Mary had six children and 25 grandchildren? This means that, today, there are thousands of Roger Williams descendents throughout the world? Maybe Roger was your ancestor!"

(taken from below website)

http://www.nps.gov/rowi/planyourvisit/index.htm

There is a memorial to Roger Williams in downtown Providence.

282 N Main St

Providence, RI 02903

"Roger Williams' statue at Roger Williams University actually features the face of baseball legend Ted Williams. Sculptor Armand LaMontagne previously made a Ted Williams statue for the Baseball Hall of Fame and figured the two must be related in some way. No known image of Roger Williams exists."

Hope this info is helpful and you get to visit the Memorial!
