The closest car rental agencies are located, off island, at the Hancock County/Bar Harbor Airport, about 12 miles from the tender dock. Maybe, you could arrange with the rental agency a pickup and drop off at the town dock.

You can rent a car from Hertz at Hancock County Airport, just off Mt Desert Island in Trenton. They offer pickup at the cruise port. Pickup must be reserved at least 24 hours in advance, and only the renting driver can be picked up and driven to the airport, so you would have to drive back to Bar Harbor for other passengers. I think you have to pay the full rental price for the extra miles.

It's about 12-15 miles from Bar Harbor to the airport. There are also other rental agencies at the airport; I don't know if any of them do pickups.
