There is a sliding scale of compensation based on the date of notice of cancellation reference the date of travel.

 

It's in Thomsons brochures

 

28-15 days = 90% loss

14-0 days = 100% loss

 

Your travel insurance may not cover all circumstances - for example I elected to cancel a week in Spain 2000 when the local hospital flagged up a late cancellation slot for a gall bladder operation. Had to bear the full loss, however health comes first.
