We are on the Eastbound Transatlantic cruise and at 3:30 this morning were awakened by an announcement in the cabins for Red Parties to report to Carriocas Dining Room. No alarms sounded and we went back to sleep. Later in the morning the cruise director confirmed there was a small fire in the galley and that the crew was cleaning up.

well at least you didn't have to get to your lifeboat stations as happened in the middle of the night on the magic about 15 years ago....

i think the fire back then was at 4 am...

i'll check the internet...i'm sure there's an article about it somewhere..

there was nothing but praise for the magic captain in that incident...

he called a mayday so there were several other cruise ships in the vicinity in case it got to an abandon ship situation...

he wanted them nearby just in case...

he said later that he didn't want to take any chances that they passengers wouldn't be ready if things got worse so he got them up in the middle of the night and with their lifevests and everything ready to go......

this was way back in 2002

The 2002 fire was a much bigger event. Most galley fires don't even get reported as they are very limited and easily extinguished by galley crew. In addition, the galleys have extensive sprinkler systems that rapidly deal with issues there.

But yes, the captain got high praise in 2002. Guests were called to muster stations and attendance taken. Preparations were made in the event that an evacuation became necessary. Fortunately, the crew was able to deal with and extinguish the fire and the guests were allowed to return to bed. The photos from this "thermal anomaly" are truly frightening.
