Congrats. We took our first cruise to the Med back in 2009...it was a 'once in a lifetime' trip, or so we thought. Now we do at least one a year, sometimes two if we can get free.

If I may ask, which line are you booked with? Big ship, small ship?

Hi to everyone, we have just booked our first cruise for 2018 for a weeks med to see if we like it, very excited especially as we will be going to Rome.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

I see you have already found your Roll Call.

You may also want to take a look at some of the Ports of Call forums here:

Hi thanks for the welcome, we booked with Costa, a suite and I have read lots of reviews which are very mixed but I thought the price for the suite was good and for our tester cruise just right. We like to sightsee so hopefully planning to do Rome, Monaco and Monte Carlo and as I find more posts from other cruisers will plan the other ports, interested in anything historical, museums etc so any advice very gratefully received :) we are staying in Barcelona before we board so really looking forward to exploring there.

Barcelona is one of our favorite cities in the Med - lots to see and do, easy to get around, and not overly expensive. I'd suggest reading posts in the forums for the ports you're visiting, but generally for Rome you'll need to book something either independently or through the cruise line - it's a good haul from Civitavecchia to downtown Rome. Monte Carlo is accessible without doing an organized tour, IMO. Unless there's something specific you want to see, you can just go ashore and wander around. So much depends on what YOU enjoy doing - some folks want to see the casinos, some want to eat and drink wine, some want to just wander around and soak in the sights.

I'd also see if there's a Roll Call started for this cruise - many times that's a good resource for getting together on excursions.

Have fun - planning is half the fun! Well, 10% of the fun anyhow. :D

Hello waterfall. welcome to the wonderful world of cruising. We are Brits too but now live in Spain. Since moving to Spain we have cruised with Costa and have been extremely happy with them. Yes, they do things a little differently and in Multiple languages but we have had so much fun with them. We too have a suite on our next cruise with them in 6 weeks time. (our first suite) i will be posting my findings on the costa forum here when i get back or when i can on the cruise. If you have any questions feel free to ask and i will try to help, i'm sure others will to. On the whole this is a very positive community. Happy cruising. :)
