Cruising With A Service Dog....everything You Ever Wanted To Know!

Recommended Posts

The past few weeks have filled all our senses with everything from rain, floods, winds, water, earth quakes, rescues and sadly, loss of life. I think we've seen just about all our hearts and minds can handle for now.

So, on that note may I wish ALL OF YOU a wonderful, safe, calm and family filled week ahead ♥ :*

Take care of yourselves and each other

Ha ha Aunty Roz you made me laugh about Horton peeing on you! With our four you can imagine we have many variations on a theme - Bonnie does that circle thing and she's so funny, she likes a bit of privacy but usually Aruba is hot on her tail and we can have several attempts of the spinning around before the perfect spot is found! And then we have Max who could have been hired as a morse code expert with his dot dot dot dash dot dash ..... You doggy folk will know what I mean! But the spinning thing we use with the young pups when we are training them to "Go busy" - the trainer walks around and around the puppy in circles - and believe me you can get very dizzy doing this but it works as the pup will look at you as though you are totally mad but all of a sudden "get it" and "go busy" on command from there on in. It does take bit of effort and time (weeks sometimes!) and you do look very stupid going around in circles saying "go busy, go busy" especially in the pouring rain but it's worth it. And of course guide dogs are trained to go "at home" so it can be difficult to get them to go busy anywhere else!

Anyway I really just came on to say have a wonderful, happy weekend everyone - I'm sitting here looking out at a very calm North Sea with a glorious sunset and although we've had rain, sun, a touch of fog, and more rain, we are truly blessed not to have had anything like the shocking weather some of you have had recently.

Chris and Holly - I am glad you're all ok.

Hope anyone on here impacted by Hurricane Irma is safe. (I know Chris is safe) I had to evacuate my mom to my apartment. And unfortunately just mere days before the hurricane hit my Dad passed away. It was not unexpected but still...

In other news, the training facility and kennels for where I got Jagger were destroyed by Irma. All the dogs are safe but have no home. Many dogs were taken in until they can rebuild.

I won't get sad on here - but if you want to know more - look up My Angel With Paws on Facebook...

Jagger was fine during the hurricane just a little antsy because of the sounds. In good news - he has LOTS of sticks to play with now...

Dear Holly - I am so sorry to hear about your Dad and send our sincere condolences to you and your Mum. It's never easy regardless.

I'm glad you are safe and Jagger did well through the storm - I sure Bonnie would be more than delighted to share his sticks! I've never known a dog who can move a wood pile quite like her!

Ok I'm going over to read your FB news about the training centre and kennels - what a shame, it's all so sad.

Holly - I was somewhat dreading having a look at FB but the dogs are all safe and are now helping clear up! There are a couple of so cute videos ...... Tissues to the ready! Lots of work to be done though and I'm sure every penny donated will be put to very good use.

How far are you from Miami?

So sorry about your Dad Holly. That's sad about the kennels, but I am glad that the doggies are okay.

Thanks for the news. Looking forward to the release of the movie.

Having read about the many experiences in this thread I'm willing to bet there are a million other great stories to share, especially about handling the constant issue of preparation for the eventual demise of the furbabies. This thread is truly one of a kind and as has been said many times thanks to Roz for starting it and being such a wonderful contributor.

here is something good...from inmates to co-workers

I've read a book called "Weekends with Daisy" and it's all about training pups with inmates during the week and then they go to an "outside" puppy walker at the weekends. The book tells the story of puppy Daisy, her inmate handler and her weekend puppy walker.

BTw when I looked at your link up popped a few other videos - I think I went through a box of tissues! I'm such a big woosie! But oh my the retired bomb dogs being reunited with their former handlers ..... What service these brave people and animals do for all of us.

Where is H.M. Roz? DKD - what's happening with you?

Hi Fairbourne,

I have some questions for your special UK expertise (planning for our trip next year to Paris and London and than a transatlantic cruise).

Eurostar says that they will take a "registered guide or assistance dog." Do you know what they mean by registered? Does the UK or France have a national assistance dog registration or do they just mean registered with one of the listed training organization?

Do you know if they sell Eukanuba dog food in the UK? I am limited in the amount of dog food that I can bring into the UK. Will it be hard to find a store that sells dog food in London?

As far as I can tell, airports in Europe don't have relief areas for dogs like we have in the US. Do you know if there are areas outside the terminals at Heathrow that dogs can use?

thanks, Dianne

Hi Fairbourne,

Oh how exciting - are you coming up to Scotland??? If not I'll just have to come down to London to see you! It's only an hours flight!

Eurostar says that they will take a "registered guide or assistance dog." Do you know what they mean by registered? Does the UK or France have a national assistance dog registration or do they just mean registered with one of the listed training organization?

No national registration as such and all public transport is accessible for guide and service/assistance dogs (I will find out for France but as we are still part of the EU they should have the same rules with regard to access).

Do you know if they sell Eukanuba dog food in the UK? I am limited in the amount of dog food that I can bring into the UK. Will it be hard to find a store that sells dog food in London?

Yes you can get it here - there are large pet stores which you could preorder online I'm sure to ensure they would have it for you and collect when you arrive or when you need it.

As far as I can tell, airports in Europe don't have relief areas for dogs like we have in the US. Do you know if there are areas outside the terminals at Heathrow that dogs can use?

I think they are starting now to become aware of the need for relief areas but I will check Heathrow for you - would you know yet which terminal you would fly into?

thanks, Dianne

I don't think we will have enough days to make it to Scotland - would love it if you can make it to London!!

That's a good idea to pre-order the dog food, maybe they will deliver to our hotel.

I don't know which terminal at Heathrow - we will be flying in the last week of October 2018 (I am not even sure which airline yet).

Thanks! Dianne

I'm so glad everyone from the hurricanes are ok. I have a few friends down there and they faired well.

I haven't been around much lately because John has been sick. He's actually been sick since the beginning of August. It's now almost the end of September and they really don't know what is wrong. This is his second time in the hospital. It's like the blind leading the blind. They think it's some kind of infection but they don't really know. Ugh. School started and he hasn't been able to go. Of course Wex doesn't know what to think about all this. All he knows is Daddy doesn't feel good.

I've already received an email from NCL that our January itinerary will most likely be changed. I assume it will be Western Caribbean instead of Eastern.

Hi Everyone, It's been a crazy, busy few days for me. I've had some health issues which have kept me busy with specialists. I told Horty to be brave and help me get through each day. And, he was right "there" with me and I am thankful for his devotion. I'm home this week and using Morey's computer. I'll be back to work on Monday. I love that feeling of "same old, same old." It means all's well in my world.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad, Holly, I'm sending you all my love and wish you easier days ahead. You're very busy right now with caring for your Mom but don't be surprised when it all hits you at once. I hope your world settles into an easier pace for you.

Cindy, I hope that John feels better and can get back to school soon. Poor Wexy, he just wants his Dad to get well and get back to his regular schedule, as do we.

Everyone in the path of the hurricanes and earthquakes [we felt one a few days ago], it scared the bejeebers out of me, be safe and take care!

I haven't had a chance to look at all the "tissue" video's yet. I'll take some time and look at them. I can tear-up just looking into Horty's eyes.

Hi All.

Holly, sorry about your dad. Glad you came through Irma safely.

Rangeley, sorry John is poorly and we hope he recovers soon

Scooter still doesn't like the potty box, but we keep at it. Meanwhile, we are working on retrieve. We just about have down "Scooter bring the phone " unless I put it in a totally new place he isn't thinking about looking in. He is getting good at finding it in the kitchen.

Next. We will work on Bring me meds with a pill bottle.

Then bring water bottle.

I have about 6 months to task train him before I am non-weight bearing for 3 months. At least I have time to plan.

Now to keep it up! I see why the program dogs are not placed until they are around 2.5 years. He will be 2 in December.
