oxypete Posted July 9, 2015 #1 Share Posted July 9, 2015 Could someone recommend a wine shop near the British Museum where I could pick up a few bottles of champagne or burgundy for pre-cruise consumption? Thanks.
Chairsin Posted July 9, 2015 #2 Share Posted July 9, 2015 Oddbins is a chain of wineshops with many London locations -- I think the Baker Street location might be the closest to the British Museum but our esteemed UK CC'ers may be able to confirm or correct that. Cotswold Eagle Posted July 9, 2015 #3 Share Posted July 9, 2015 (edited) You may be right, but there's no way I'd trek to Baker Street from Bloomsbury just to go to an Oddbins for a few bottles. OP, I can't immediately think of one in the vicinity, but not really my manor. You are probably just as well using a supermarket. Whereabouts near the museum will you be - if towards Russell Square, probably the Waitrose in the Brunswick is your best bet. If towards Tottenham Court Road there are several around and about, including a Sainsbury near Goodge Street. I remember we had a thread on specialist wine shops, maybe last year sometime? Cotswold Eagle Posted July 9, 2015 #4 Share Posted July 9, 2015 (edited) D'oh! Check out Planet of the Grapes in New Oxford Street and don't let the pun put you off :) Edited July 9, 2015 by Cotswold Eagle
Cotswold Eagle Posted July 12, 2015 #5 Share Posted July 12, 2015 D'oh! Check out Planet of the Grapes in New Oxford Street and don't let the pun put you off :) Cancel that - I just walked past Planet of the Grapes and it is closed, all boarded up. Apparently they will have new premises later in the year.
orchestrapal Posted July 12, 2015 #6 Share Posted July 12, 2015 Unless you are looking for very expensive wines, supermarkets in london have a pretty good selection.
Bob++ Posted July 13, 2015 #7 Share Posted July 13, 2015 Unless you are looking for very expensive wines, supermarkets in london have a pretty good selection. Agreed - The bigger ones have a huge selection from all over the world and most are priced between £5 and £15. They will also have Champagne and other fizzy wines and generally the quality is surprisingly good. I suggest a foray early on to buy a couple of likely bottles (you won't find many half bottles on offer) to try before you invest in a larger quantity. Be sure to look out for offers: 2 for £10 is not unusual. I would tend to avoid any priced at less than £5.
oxypete Posted July 13, 2015 Author #8 Share Posted July 13, 2015 Thank you very much - I was looking for a rose champagne like Billecart-Salmon or Laurent -Perrier. Maybe 50 £ or so.
Cotswold Eagle Posted July 14, 2015 #9 Share Posted July 14, 2015 (edited) The LP will often be found in supermarkets, including the two I mentioned - Waitrose and Sainsbury's. Billecart-Salmon do not supply supermarkets. Your best bet for them would indeed be an Oddbins or better yet take a trip to London's best wine merchant, Berry Bros & Rudd over in St James's (http://www.bbr.com) ETA: Just checked and neither are listing the NV. Maybe one of the high-end department stores, such as Harrods or Fortnum and Mason, or get someone like Lea and Sandeman (who don't have a convenient store for Bloomsbury) to deliver to your hotel!
