Site assignment on Quest

Our Mediterranean Jewels cruise on Quest begins on July 27. We had booked GTY for a veranda. Anyway my TA called & we are in Suite 802 which is a V4 level room. Looks good to me!

Had that room number on the Sojoun and Odyssey. Loved it. Very quiet since it is forward of the elevator and stairs. Very convenient to pool and dining.

We were in 801 on Odyssey. LOVED the location!

I'm just so excited. Only a few more days - the constant discussion between my husband & myself is how often we will get off the ship. He's thinking we should just enjoy the ship but I do love to explore! So hopefully we'll find a happy medium. The itinerary is full of terrific destinations & I don't want to miss anything! But based on all your posts, it seems that the ship itself is the biggest star, no?

Everyone has a different view on this. There are some who see the ship as the destination and don't get off very much. There are others who like to do tours or go exploring and who make the most of their time ashore.

In our case, we tend to wander off the ship between 9am - 10am, spend three or four hours ashore and then come back for a late lunch and to laze about by the pool. Obviously, every port is different and in some we spend longer off the ship than in others.

The ship is great, but it is nice to have a change of scene now and then, and fun to go in the tender. Then , of course, the best part is getting back on the ship after you've done strolling for a few hours.

Maybe I'm crazy but to me the ship is a great and luxurious means to take me places I want to see. Would I check into the George V in Paris because it's one of the greatest hotels in the world and then not leave the premises? You don't have to do a nine or ten hour sightseeing marathon every day but seeing the sights, tasting the local food, meeting local people, learning about the local culture are all part of what traveling is about. Otherwise you'd be better off booking a TA than a Med cruise and you could just enjoy the ship.

When I was on the Odyssey last year there seemed to be 3 groups of people on the ship. The first was the explorers that were up at the crack of dawn and off the ship as soon as possible to go out on an excursion. The second group tended to have a relaxing morning and would leave the ship around 11 and wander around the port for a couple of hours. The third group never left the ship.

I personally fall into the first category. I've spent alot of money and travelled quite a distance that I want to see as much as possible. The second group tended to be people that had already been to the places we were stopping at. Been there. Done that. I talked to some of the guests in the third category that seemed to lounge all day at the pool. What I found out was that some of these people were from nearby countries (Germany and the UK for a Greek Isles cruise) and had booked almost at the last minute due to a ridiculously low fair. They were treating the cruise as an all inclusive resort/spa.

I thought it was odd to not leave the ship at all but after seeing their point of view I guess it makes sense... Whatever makes you happy!

So agree. I don't understand why some people travel at all. We have cruised mostly in the Caribbean and Canada/New England, but want to learn about the different islands and ports to our north. We may not take 8 hour excursions, but always find interesting things to do and see. Always a tour of every island our first time in each and then several hours in the port walking, eating, and talking. My pet peeve is the folks who care less about the island/country they are in and head straight to a beach for the day. They couldn't tell you a thing about where they've been and think every island is the same.

I think we might have been on a cruise with you on the Sojourn- December 2010?

Thanks for all the thoughts & input. I'm finding this whole discussion fascinating.

For me personally, I am recovering from breaking both legs in April 2011 - 15 months ago. I am *finally* doing somewhat better, but still have a lot of pain & need help with walking - crutches or on a bad day, a wheelchair. I *normally* would be in the first group - the one that is up & at 'em, exploring everything I could in the time allotted. My husband is able to relax better than I, so he's not quite so Type A in this way. However with my current situation, I'm hoping we find a balance. I can't imagine that I'd be in St Tropez or Monte Carlo & not get off the ship! But my hubby is worried I'll overdo it. (My bones are very weak. And I'm 43 - a little young for the type of problems I'm having.)

Anyway I'm just ecstatic I get to go on this cruise! I've been in bed pretty much for over a year - visiting so many doctors & specialists who are still puzzled about my issues. (It's not a good sign when 4 specialists at Mayo Clinic are standing around, looking at you & scratching their heads.) Normally we travel a lot - and we haven't been able to do much of that lately. And it's our 20th anniversary. I just feel so lucky & blessed - I'm finally getting back to Europe! I think the cruise will be perfect. Sorry to go on & on about myself & my maladies...

Keep the discussion coming on how you enjoy your Seabourn experience. So interesting to me. So if you see a gal in a wheelchair being pushed around by a 6 foot 6 inch tall guy, you've found us! And hopefully we'll be on land a fair amount too. But I'm going to try to be happy with wherever I end up.

Just a tip for Monte Carlo. There are a great many strategically placed elevators for public use and which can make your husband's task much easier if he is pushing you.

I did not realize your situation when I posted yesterday. Now I understand better why you and your husband might prefer to stay on board at some ports. I wish you both a great trip and I know you will make the most of it whatever you choose to do.

No worries about that. We are in a little different circumstances than usual, but I think it will be wonderful regardless. I appreciate all the comments so much. It makes planning the trip so much fun for me! And I do understand where you are coming from too. I agree, getting to experience the culture of anywhere one travels is a big part what makes traveling the adventure it is.

I've perviously been to Rome (where we spend 2 days after the cruise) and to La Spezia (and Cinque Terre) before, but otherwise have not visited the ports where we will be stopping. I'm spoiled for choice - each stop sounds lovely.

Have you thought of renting a scooter? Contact Seabourn and see if the can help you. It will make you much more independent. I always rent one for Las Vegas!

It really makes everything much simpler and if they remove a chair from your suite it will fit easily!

We had a friend in a similar situation, last cruise and she DID overdo it, and has paid ever since, so be careful! I know its hard to miss all the wonderful sights, sounds and smells of all the Ports, but perhaps some of the "organized tours" where you can see everything from the bus window might suit you better this time? Of course in the Med just wandering around the towns is wonderful, so let your husband do the work and push the chair! :D

As someone who is now more mobiiity challenged, I think a scooter is a great idea, although I have not done it for a cruise, there were two on the Sojourn on one of my last cruises. Might be easier than the wheel/chair.
