Memorial services on Splendor

Next year we are having a memorial cruise for my beautiful daughter who passed away at the age of 33 from breast cancer. She was diagnosed 6 weeks before her wedding. She was married on the Carnival Pride 03/28/10.

We thought it would be fitting to have a memorial service onboard and scatter some of her ashes. Her husband could not do the Pride (too much heartache) and since we are from Philadelphia we chose to sail from NY. The cruise will also raise money for her passion Children's Literacy Initative (she was a teacher).

I am hoping someone has experience with an onboard memorial. I think there will be about 25-30 of us. I would appreciate any feedback that could be provided.

you contact group services. the same people who run the 1hour open bar party. it will be run the same way. you tell them what you want and they give you a room that is available for that date and time.

Called today. Although I don't need a room; yes; guest services will inform the ship up until 10 days prior to sailing to make arrangements. Thanks!:D

I don't have any experience with it yet, but I will in about 7 weeks. Going on the Magic Thanksgiving week, and we are planning on doing this for my dad, who passed away from cancer in February. From what I've heard, they take the group down to one of the lower decks, away from normal passenger areas, and allow you to have a service and scatter the ashes. Unless you intend to scatter the ashes directly into the ocean, you will need a biodegradable urn.

That's about all I know at the moment, but I should be able to provide more information about the process after my Thanksgiving cruise.

My condolensces on your loss.

We did this 2 years ago next month on the Magic. It was beautiful and peaceful. Everything was set up for us. We met at a given time and we were escorted to the lower back of the ship. My father was in the Navy for nearly 27 years. This was his wish. The captain and another person took us. We held a quiet peaceful gathering of about 18. When it was time my three sisters and I had fluted glasses with a little bit of ashes in each glass. We said our final goodbyes and one by one we scattered his ashes of the back. We cried and smiled and said goodbye. A day I will never ever forget.

I did this last October for my mom. I was told I needed a biodegradable container before hand but once on the ship was told nothing but the ashes can be put in the water - even a biodegradable container. Carnival also gave me a letter with LAT/LONG of the ship's position when we scattered the ashes which I thought was a nice touch.

Thanks everyone for all the information. Our funeral director had told Casey's husband to bring back his box with the ashes (it was made into a memorial box) and he will remove some ashes and but them in a biodegradeable container. Maybe I can ask for a few containers so we can each say a special goodbye to her.

I am hoping that I will be able to manage this. I am finding so many things so much harder than I thought. She suffered horribly and I thought I was ready for her to be a peace. But somehow that doesn't ease the pain.

I truly am thankful for the kind words and the information.

Cathy I am so sorry for your heartbreaking loss! But what a fitting way to remember your daughter I'm sure there is no other place she would have wanted it.

Thank you for your sympathy. We canceled a cruise last year because things were starting to spiral out of control for her. She was so upset that we did. I told her we were just waiting until she could go with us. In the back of my heart I knew this was how it would be.

Casey always found joy in life and loved to make memories especially with her friends and family. I plan to carry that spirit with me and make sure my family is surrounded with that joy.
