Rum Runners anyone?

We love our rum runners and use them every cruise. As a matter of fact just ordered a new set cause the old ones were beat up. They have never leaked but no need to chance it. We put the small ones in out pockets (cargo shorts) as the metal detectors do not pick them up, and well we are a redneck couple (good ole southern men) so we pack our cowboy boots. We always place the large rum runners in the boots in our checked luggage.

Never had a problem with RR's. Have used the "water bottle" trick in a couple of ports too - and that was fine.

Hopefully with Princess' new crack down on confiscating and destroying liquor, the RRs will still sail through!

I have been using Rum Runner products on cruise ships (mostly Princess) for 6 or 7 years. I only bring enough for one drink a night in my room while getting ready for dinner. Never have I been caught. Prior to using the rum runners, always brought a small bottle, and again, was never caught. Not so on a recent trip on the Oasis of the Seas (RCI). Was asked to go to the luggage hold after boarding. Crew was nice and when I explained that it was merely white wine in one bag they let me go....with the bag of wine. It may be the newer detection systems on the RCCI ship, as I have never been asked or stopped on Princess. I just wish you could buy a bottle, even at the ships prices, on board to keep in your room.

You can on Princess....

You know, these "how much booze can I sneak onboard?" conversations have been ongoing on CC for years.

Now, we know for a fact that somebody at Princess, at least, reads at least some of these boards. And that over the past year Princess has really tightened its rules. So a qualified thanks goes out to those of you who've loudly flouted the rules. I'm not saying that there's necessarily a cause and effect, but...

Next up? Discussions of how to smoke weed onboard without getting busted?

We are sailing out of NOLA soon and bought some rum runners, the plan is to pack them in our checked suitcases rolled up in jeans, inside boots, toiletry bags, etc. I am also debating putting one in my carry-on bag in my make-up bag b/c its so full of crap with small tops I can't imagine they could see it.

I guess we will see what happens, life on the edge right haha!

On a Princess Cruise last April, I placed four RRs in baggage that I checked with porter on pier. None were confiscated. During the 25-day cruise, l chatted with many passengers who packed RR and none were confiscated. Several passengers also took box wine out of the box and just packed the spouted bag. Those also made it onboard.

If you plan to purchase liquor in Ensenada, return to the ship with a large group or wait for a large tour group to return and to go through ship security with them. Security is in such a rush that they seldom catch your bottles. If the scanner sees them, they're too busy to escort you to the confiscating / check in table. I've walked onboard with liquor, scanner told me to check liquor in at table and been pointed to the table. With a crowded area, the table staff have no idea who has been sent to them so I just walked past the table and up the stairs with my bottles.

Thanks aaerobear and ONT-CA. I think I've decided to bite the bullet and pay to check a bag on my flight. That way I can bring a bigger suitcase and check at the pier. More space, more room to hide the liquor. And I can bring the really good booze I never drink which I already have at home-- instead of wasting more money in Miami to buy more liquor I don't really need.

What is the difference in paying for an extra bag checked vs. paying for the booze o board? ;)

(Just realized this is responding to a post from 2 years ago... still a valid question, I think!)

This is a perfectly fine place for it, and the OP has gotten a good response. And another one here:

They work perfectly.

I don't understand why this post is on the "gay and lesbian forum". You might get a better response elsewhere.

EXACTLY. I figured a queen would know, let alone a drunk one at that.

Thanks guys.

I am going to be trying my new RR out of Ft. Lauderdale in 6 days:p, but I will be riding the Princess Cruise Lines.

OK, I'm no stickler for strict obedience. But I bet some of you boys run businesses, and I'm just wondering how you'd feel if your clients violated the terms of their contractual agreements with you (essentially to save money) and then boasted about it in a public forum.

I pretty much always bring a 750 ml bottle of vodka ( a brand I prefer that I've not seen on ANY ship) It' in my carry on. I've never tried to hide it, if they take it, they take it. Sailing on NCL, HAL, Princess, Celebrity and RCCL no one has ever commented on it or taken it and it's really not "hidden". In some instances it's just in a big carry on open topped beach bag type bag and all the contents on the bag is clearly visible. Seems the folks checking when boarding or not cruise staff but other security. However whenever purchasing on shore during the cruise, it has ALWAYS been taken and delivered to our cabin the last evening. In all of those instances, it's been ship's staff checking/scanning. Some lines do also allow a bottle or two of wine to be carried on.

Checked luggage is randomly checked. Carry-on luggage... ALL are screened, ala x-ray. So perhaps your best luck is to check a bag? Since it is random, there is no way they can catch everyone... feeling lucky?

Sealed bottles, if caught, can be returned at the conclusion of the cruise. Unsealed, or RRs are confiscated. Presume they will return the RR to you if you or they dispose of the booze, but not sure.

If they notice something in your checked luggage, you get a note in your room to report to security to claim your luggage... they will open and inspect in your presence only.

You are not "wanded" but walk through a metal

detector. Any back-packs, jackets, etc., go thru the aforementioned x-ray machine. I really don't know how they catch a half-pint or pint bottle when you walk aboard the ship, particularly if you buy a plastic 'bottle' for this purpose, but I have not tried.

We just pack two RR in each piece of luggage in two different areas of each suitcase. That way when called down to security and they open your case, you can just pick out one of the RR and leave the other hidden. Worked for us once and so we do it now all the time.

Here are a few things that have worked for myself:

1. Some cruiselines allow you to bring several bottles of wine on board. Last year, we simply found a bottle of tequila and bottle of rum that was shaped like a wine bottle. I normally just pack one in each cowboy boot, have never had one confiscated.

2. If running from port, I've had success with clear alcohol; We purchase what we want, then find an area to transfer to a liter labeled water bottle before going back to the ship. Just don't fill it all the way, and definitely find a bottle that seals.

3. Don't drink so much ;)

An old thread revitalized on the use of RR. Since my very first cruise where I did not now better and followed the rule to not being on liquor, I have always brought it onboard with me. First I just put the bourbon bottle in my checked luggage and did not have a problem. Then I found out about RR and started using them in about 2009. i put two in each luggage separated so I can always offer one up if needed. I have never had a problem getting my RR to the cabin. One trick I did learn was to wear cargo pants/shorts when boarding with large front pockets. A small RR with liquor fits in nicely and I wear a long tshirt to cover up the top of the pocket. The RR is not metal so I just walk through security with my stash in my pocket(s). Again I have never had a problem.

Put RR's in checked luggage..or order a bottle from Ship Services and not worry about it all ;) Seriously the stress of "wondering if we're gonna be caught?" is much more taxing than just paying the price for a bottle delivered to your stateroom...jmho...:) Either way hope you have a great time!

How do you order a bottle to be delivered to your room? Does Royal Car. do this?

Believe it or not, the cruise lines read these pages. They all want to know what we are saying about them. I've had many ship employees tell me that. So, whatever we are doing they already know about it.

We took a Celebrity cruise out of Barcelona. Just before boarding the boat there was a duty free store. Once we were on the boat we noticed people with loads of liquor, cases of beer, etc. It was all allowed, no hiding anything. We ran back to a near empty store at that point. I don't know if this is a regular thing but it was a surprise. Has anyone else ran into that type of thing?
