Dubrovnik: June Experience, Tips, Visuals, Fun!

TLC - hey do you think 5 would fit in one of the panoramic tour cabs or would we need 2 cabs?

Appreciate this good question. Based on our June 2011 experience, three people could work in the back seat of the cab and I sat up front with the driver. No room for the fifth passenger. Sorry. BUT, don't know if today you might be lucky and get a cab that uses a larger "van" type of cab. Maybe? Maybe not? Be flexible, but prepared to do two different vehicles.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

For those seeking interesting and different locations, this weekend's New York Times Travel Section will have this headline: "52 Places to Go in 2017" with many different ideas for adventures to be considered for the future.

Here is one story options and highlights of special interest to us: "Dubrovnik, Croatia: New ways to enjoy a gem on the Dalmatian Coast. With its limestone-paved streets and 80-foot-high walls surrounding Old Town, this star of the Dalmatian Coast has long been able to rest on its aesthetic laurels — you might recognize it as King’s Landing on 'Game of Thrones.' " Yes, we super loved our time here and it is great to see this area getting the attention and praise it deserves.

Among other great places highlighted are: Madagascar, the Great Barrier Reef, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Sedona, Athens, Madrid, the Lofoten Islands of Norway and Budapest. Some of these locations we have super enjoyed visiting, but there are lots more wonderful places meriting future attention. It's great doing this exploring and considering other interesting locations for the future. Love reading these various stories about nice options to consider!!

From the London/UK Guardian today, they have this headline: "Dubrovnik is just as magical as when I visited aged 10" with this sub-head: "The old Croatian city, which inspired Annabelle Thorpe’s first novel, weathered the war of the 1990s and has emerged as glamorous as before".

Here are some more of their story highlights by this well-known writer: "Dubrovnik is as eternal as Venice. There are those who say it has become a victim of its own success – flooded with cruise ships and Game of Thrones fans. To me, this misses the point: at different times it has been Roman, Byzantine and Venetian; it’s withstood wars and sieges, and emerged as glamorous and unbowed as ever. Ridiculously beautiful but still real, it remains as magical to me now as when I first visited in 1981, aged 10."

This profile has a large number of nice pictures and a wide variety of options to consider for potential activities in and around charming Dubrovnik. Nice writing that builds the excitement for an upcoming visit and/or brings back nice memories for this wonderful part of the Croatian coast.

Thanks so much. This is wonderful information. Look forward to visiting in June.

Appreciate these great comments and this follow-up. Good luck for your upcoming visit to Dubrovnik in June. Report back to what you loved most, think deserving future visits, etc.

As linked below, we just got back from doing a Panama Canal cruise. This includes stops in Aruba, Cartagena/Colombia, Costa Rica and Cabo San Lucas. Great finish and sights in San Francisco. Now shifting gears to finish planning for our June 2017 sailing. We will be doing Lisbon/Portugal to Rouen/France, including our first experiences for key parts of Spain, Bordeaux, Brittany, etc. Then, for late January 2018 to be doing our first visit to Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong, Vietnam, Cambodia, Angkor Wat, Laos and Bangkok. Just got done today getting the last of our needed Frequent Flyer tickets on Cathay Pacific in business class for this trip early next year. “Free” air flights in business over such long distances really helps!!

Panama Canal? Just completed Feb. 28-Mar. 15, 2017, Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco adventure through the Panama Canal with our first stops in Colombia, Central America and Mexico, plus added time in the great Golden Gate City. Lots of fun pictures!! Those pictures start on the second page, post #26. See more at:

Just be aware that Dubrovnik is starting to aggressively quota day visitors, so if two cruise ships arrive on the same day and the other arrives earlier than SS it may be problematic.

Still thinking and loving lots on Dubrovnik. Hoping to get back to this wonderful region in the future. Just got back in late June from doing great parts of Portugal, Spain, France, etc.. This included doing five days in Lisbon, sailing from Portugal, seeing for the first time NW Spain, Bordeaux, Brittany, etc. Great sights and sites!

Below are a few "samples" to prove the value for exploring these wonderful areas. The central/connecting part was an eleven-day, very port-intensive cruise from Lisbon to Rouen/France. For many more pictures and full details, check out this live/blog linked below.

On another board, the above interesting warning about Dubrovnik was raised. I did check a little more. From the fairly-respected Bloomberg News on August 24, they had this headline: Croatia Has a Plan to Avoid the Tourism Backlashwith these story highlights: Croatia is seeking to shift away from its tried-and-true model of packing in tourists in favor of increasing visitors’ overall spending, dealing a potential blow to cruise and budget holiday operators. The former Yugoslav republic has long catered to ship operators. Now it’s also witnessing a surge fueled by fans flocking to the historical port city of Dubrovnik, which featured in the last Star Wars film and serves as King’s Landing in the HBO television series Game of Thrones.

This story has a number of quotes from the Mayor of Dubrovnik and notes their "plan is to limit the number of cruise ships to two per day and about 4,000 passengers, from the current situation where up to six dock."

The cruise industry is not happy with this potential "plan". What is unclear is as to whether this idea is totally finalized and when legally it would start, how it would be enforced, etc. In reading more, this Mayor just took office in June and it seems much that this potential is still in "play" as to when and what happens next. The Dubrovnik Mayor would like to have more people stay longer in his town and not just be day-visitors on a cruise ship. He encourage ship to stop as some nearby, but less used ports, etc.

Any other insights, details, information, etc., as to when and/or how likely these limits are going to happen?

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Independent in late July, they had this headline: What to Do on a Games of Thrones-Inspired Weekend in Croatia's Walled City with these highlights: “Super fans can get the ultimate GoT fix by heading to Dubrovnik, the setting for many of the series' most dramatic moments”.

There are lots of ideas and options to consider if visiting wonderful Dubrovnik. Here are some more story highlights: "Dubrovnik’s ancient stone walls and rounded towers will feel like home for any fan of HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones. The Croatian walled city doubles as the location for King’s Landing, the capital city of Westeros and epicentre of many of the series’ most memorable – and grisliest – political feuds."

From the London/UK Independent late last month, they have this headline: “35 Trips Every Couple Should Take in their Lifetime” with Dubrovnik being one of their top, highly-suggested cities in this desired must-see category.

Among the highlights for Dubrovnik, they noted: "A picturesque city bordering the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is a historical gem, featuring limestone streets and architecture ranging from baroque to renaissance to Gothic. The Old Town is surrounded by stone walls that date back to the 1500s."

In this region around and near Croatia, they also suggested: “It might be cheesy, but there's nothing like floating down Venice's many labyrinthine waterways on a gondola. The city has a mysterious aura, and is filled with secret passageways and stunning palaces." And, also: "With its rugged coastline and colorful fishing villages built right into cliffs that overlook the Mediterranean, the Amalfi Coast is an Italian gem. There are beaches to lounge on, stone streets to explore, and plenty of tasty seafood to eat."

From the London/UK Sunday Times this morning, they have this headline: Dubrovnik city guide: the Big Weekend with these highlights: Few can resist Dubrovnik’s movie-star looks: a jumble of baroque palaces, gleaming limestone streets and bell towers encircled by huge ramparts, basking in the Adriatic. Too few, in fact. Blame it on Game of Thrones, for which this is a key location, but in summer it can seem that everybody wants a slice of Croatia’s southernmost city. The mayor plans to halve the number of visitors in Stari Grad, the old town, by restricting the number of cruise ships calling here. But there’s no need to wait: if you know where to look, it’s surprisingly easy to avoid the crowds. And summer is a magical time in Dubrovnik, with festivals, escapes to wooded islands and wine to be drunk at pavement cafes.

Lots of ideas, options, tips, etc., in this media profile. Brings back nice memories from his wonderful part of the world.

From the Wall Street Journal this weekend, they have this headline: Guide to Croatia’s Island Hideouts with these highlights: “With a thousand islands scattered along their country’s jade-green Adriatic coast, from deserted flyspecks to hipster outposts, there’s no shortage of places to lick one’s wounds—or bask in silver-medal glory (of their nation's World Cup team). The international jet set has long crowed about Hvar, where the main town features a postcard-perfect harbor and raucous nightlife, while more budget-minded beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts gravitate to Brac. History buffs tend to seek out Losinj, a favorite retreat in the days of the Habsburg Empire, and little-known Ciovo is starting to catch on with trendsetters.

In this profile are a number of great locations to consider if you want to expand your Croatian experiences beyond just wonderful Dubrovnik. Love to go back to this charming and scenic region. We only were able to enjoy Dubrovnik in 2011 (and nearby Kotor). Seeking to see and do more in the future, including sampling some of these locations mentioned in this WSJ article.

Beautiful pictures and very helpful information. I'm just wondering how you got back to your ship?

Appreciate these kind comments and this very good follow-up question. Getting back was fairly easy. Outside of the main gate were a number of taxi cabs. Just took one for the four of us. Easy, simple, quick. Glad we did not try to walk back. A little bit of a distance, especially after doing the "Wall Walk" and all of the exploring in and around this fun and interesting historic city. As I vaguely recall, it was ten euro for this return taxi ride to our ship. Next to the ship, there were lots of "opportunities" to buy various gifts and local "items". But, I am not a shopper, just focus on capturing visual images!

Added question or info needs? Happy to share more!

From the London/UK Telegraph a little over a week ago, they had this headline: “48 hours in . . . Dubrovnik, an insider guide to the magnificent walled city”  with these highlights: “Dubrovnik is one of the world’s most magnificent walled cities, overlooking the calm blue Adriatic. Once the capital of the mighty sea-faring Republic of Ragusa (1358-1808), it's now Croatia’s most upmarket destination. Historically, this diminutive republic was sophisticated, refined and cultured. Today, the pedestrian-only Old Town – packed with aristocratic palazzi and elegant Baroque churches, contained within sturdy medieval fortifications – draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, including glamorous names such as Beyoncé, Roman Abramovich, Sir Roger Moore and Naomi Campbell. Beyond the walls, attractions include wine bars, classy seafood restaurants and five-star hotels.”

A large number of details and options are included in this helpful and interesting profile.  This sub-head is: "Medieval and Baroque splendour on the Adriatic."  Here are some added tips and ideas: "Any first-time visit to Dubrovnik should begin by walking a full circuit (just over a mile) of the magnificent 13th-century City Walls. It'll take well over an hour, and you can expect ever-changing perspectives over the terracotta rooftops of the Old Town and out to sea. To dodge the crowds, check how many cruise ships will be in Dubrovnik on any particular day on the Dubrovnik Port Authority, and then pick what looks like the quietest date.  Afterwards, stroll along the limestone-paved Stradun (aka Placa), the main pedestrian thoroughfare through the Old Town, running from Pile Gate in the west to Ploče Gate in the east. Originally a sea channel, it was filled in during the 12th century, and is now lined with souvenir shops and pricey cafés."

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Sunday Times tomorrow, they will have this headline: “The ultimate guide to Croatia: best holidays, villas and hotels”  with this sub-head: "Cool hotels and villas, mountain adventures and sailing trips around secret islands: Annabelle Thorpe knows the 20 best trips to book now".

Here is a sample for just one of the story highlights and options to consider: “The Croatian coastline is made for sailing holidays, and the tranquil Elafiti islands, a stone’s throw from Dubrovnik, lets you pair days on the water with exploring on land. Scott Dunn has a new nine-night sailing holiday, with a skipper to take care of the hard work and introduce guests to local highlights. The yacht sleeps six in the three cabins and the itinerary includes visits to the islands of Kolocep, Sipan and Lopud, as well as time in Dubrovnik.”

Dubrovnik is great, but clear there many additional potentials to consider and excellent reasons to return to this scenic and historic area.

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Sunday Times, they will have this headline tomorrow: “30 best cultural holidays in Europe”  with this sub-head: "From art and architecture to film festivals and classical concerts, here is the pick of Europe’s hot tickets".

One of top Europe locations featured is Dubrovnik.  Here is the highlight featured for this scenic/historic star: “Although beloved by Game of Thrones set-jetters, Dubrovnik’s focus will briefly be less Lannister and more Little Prince this summer. That’s because a musical adaptation of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s acclaimed novella, about a young prince visiting Earth, is taking place at the Croatian seaside spot’s 70th Summer Festival. The bash involves 80 shows in open-air, old-town locations, plus programmes of sea polo matches and outdoor cinema (July 10 to August 25, dubrovnik-festival.hr).
Where to stay Three nights’ B&B from June 30 at the beachside Hotel Vis, which has a thatched restaurant terrace facing the sea, costs from £519pp, including flights, transfers and a ticket to the Tom Jones show (01425 480400, prestigeholidays.co.uk)”

Hi, Susan! I don't have the name of the driver or company. It doesn't work that way there in Dubrovnik at the ship docks. They have a large number of cabs there with posted prices going just to the Pile Gate (10 euro), Panoramic (50 euro) or some other nearby locations, etc. The secret is that you need to talk with the potential driver to get some sense of their ability to communicate at a basic/decent level in English, share added info, their personality/style, etc. When we got in the cab, he pitched for/suggested the panoramic trip, told us the details, we ask some added questions, he had good answers and we were off on our roughly one hour trip. It was a great and super highlight of our visit to Dubrovnik. He knew where to take us, telling us more about the area, answering various questions, having time up at the cable car location, etc. He shared lots of details and family impacts on the 1991-95 war years, nearby battle areas, etc. If you settle for or have a driver who just "drives", you'll miss lots of the interesting details, not get your questions answered, not get lots of "local flavor" that was very helpful for us, etc. Does this help?

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Terry, your post is great. Thanks for answering all of the questions.  I may have missed the answer to this, but was the 50 euro charge for a round trip tour or just up to the top of the cable car?

Thanks!

Excellent follow-up question from Piper who lives near Big-D, Dallas.  Yes, when we were there, that 50 euro charge was for a round-trip in seeing various sights near sea-level in and around the town and then going, up, UP for the super view over Dubrovnik.  They returned us to the main gate where we entered the historic area.  Maybe we could have arranged for the cable car down, but not everyone in each group likes those types of activities.  Also, the cable car can get very busy with long lines, depending how many cruise ships are in port for that day.  Does this help?  Need more?  Not sure as to the current taxi charge, but for us, this worked super well, especially given our driver's good English skills and info that he shared.

From Marie Claire magazine earlier this month, they had this headline: “Game of Thrones getaway: 48 hours in Dubrovnik” with this summary portion with this subhead highlight: "medieval walled city, award-winning wine, amazing Italian food and Game of Thrones settings -- Dubrovnik is pure magic".

Here are some of their profile highlights: “A sea port looking out over the Adriatic, the region is part Mediterranean, but also part of the Balkans, and Catholic – yet surrounded by Islamic and Orthodox neighbours. Its rich history and tiny size make Dubrovnik the ideal weekend getaway. For foodies, it’s got the added draw of a fascinating cuisine that melds Italian with other influences, and a growing reputation on the international wine scene as producer of some award-winning varieties.  The main area to explore is the UNESCO-protected medieval walled Old City, with its gothic fortresses and vine-filled alleyways, lined with shops and restaurants. For the most spectacular sea views, do the walk around the fortified walls.”

Many more details, picture, options, etc., are included in this article that brought back nice memories from visiting this charming and historic city.

From the New York Times Travel Section coming this weekend, they had this headline: Six Ways to Find a Little Elbow Room in Dubrovnik" with this sub-headline: "Visitors can get through the stone gates of this medieval city and meander through its cobbled streets without logjams, even in the high season. They can also get far from fellow travelers with easy jaunts to nearby islands.

Here are some of their reporting highlights: “This compact, seaside city in Croatia has drawn millions of travelers from around the globe for years. Its popularity grew when HBO’s 'Game of Thrones' used it as a primary location and visitors soon overwhelmed the city, particularly in the summer. Officials have introduced measures to manage the crowds without limiting the number of visitors, but according to the Croatian National Tourist Board, this year is on pace to become the city’s busiest ever.  Planning takes artful timing, minor sacrifices and a bit of luck.”

This profile suggests six ways to consider, including "Game the cruise ship schedule", "Ditch the golden-hour photo shoot", "Take a breather in a monastery", "Find life outside the walls", "A green oasis, just offshore" and "Head farther to sea".

Many options to consider, including being lucky when there that there is not too many big, BIG cruise ships in the port on your day in Dubrovnik.  Plan and research accordingly.  Good luck!!

Can anyone compare their experiences in Croatia during May and June vs September or October?  We were in Italy and Greece last October and enjoyed warm, dry weather.  I am looking at selecting from the series of cruises in May and June 2024 to Croatia that run between Ravenna and Rome on board Celebrity Constellation.

Any other thoughts?

Much appreciated.

Thanks.

Great questions!!  We were in Dubrovnik in mid June and one of the big pluses is that for many in Europe, July and August are the peak travel times.  Many schools do not complete their schedules till later June.

Avoiding crowds and congestions is really important.  With May and later September and October, my general sense is that the weather is good and places are less crowded.  But these days, the weather and travel congestion does not always follow the past patterns.  Things change, both good and not as ideal.
