Dubrovnik: June Experience, Tips, Visuals, Fun!

For our June 16 visit to Dubrovnik, here are some of my notes, tips, visuals, etc. Its old city and walls have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. That's correct and deserved recognition. These ramparts are intact and encircle old city with circumference of 1.5 miles. I ascended the stairway (approximately 50 steps) at Pile Gate, reaching top of wall where you move counter-clockwise to see the various nearby views, coastal area, roofs, buildings, etc. It was a great walk around that half of the wall. We strolled the Stradun and enjoyed the center of the Old Town. We had lunch at Komarda just east of the harbor with a spectacular view, thanks to a suggestion from Carol. This place got great reviews from Trip Advisor and our table view was to die for. You can email them at: restorankomarda@gmail.com

Here are some added notes on Dubrovnik:

1. Called “the Pearl of the Adriatic" by Lord Byron, George Bernard Shaw proclaimed “those who seek paradise on earth should seek it in Dubrovnik”. Re-built after a 1667 earthquake and 1991-95 bombings during the post-Yugoslavia civil wars, it is considered to have the most attractive Baroque core of any city in Europe.

2. The old City Walls, up to 39 feet thick and 82 feet high in places, helped protect one of the most perfectly preserved medieval cities in Europe. These walls protected this city-state against pirates and potential conquerors until 1808 when the French and Napoleon gained control. Along the wall walk, there are great views of the red-tile roofs, Minceta, Bokar, St. John and Revelin forts, the Adriatic Sea, etc. Access to the walls is near Pile Gate and is open 9 am to 6:30 pm. There is a second entrance near the harbor area. I only did the first part, along the mostly coastal areas. Lots of great views, a few shops, very much worth the effort to do this walk. They only take local currency or credit cards. You can’t pay here with euros to do this Wall Walk.

3. You must stroll down Dubrovnik’s main pedestrianized street called the Stradun or Placa. It has shops, cafes, plus the Church of St Saviour, Franciscan Monastery (top rated as a 14th century Romanesque cloister), etc. Nearby is Rector’s Palace, more castle-like in its style and now a cultural venue.

4. Other major attractions in this town include the Dominican Monastery (started 1315), its main Baroque Cathedral (with its highly-rated Treasury), the Church of St Blaise, Lovrienac Fortress, Sponza Palace and the Old Harbor on the east side of this historic area. A nearby Cable Car ascends up Mount Srd.

5. The four of us got a cab when coming off of the ship and for 50 euro got BOTH a panoramic tour across the new bridge, up to several super scenic spots on the mountains above town, learned more on the early 1990's war there, etc. Then we were dropped at the main gate. We didn't need to do the Cable Car as we got to see the view from with our introductory cab ride around town.

Below are some of my many great pictures from this wonderful, historic town on a great weather day.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Just back from a June 7-19 Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik. Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc. These postings are now at 16,386 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. We started with a local cab driver who gave us a “panoramic tour”, including crossing this unique bridge near the main cruise ship docking area. He called this bridge their “Golden Gate” like in San Francisco. It is nine years old. You can see the Solstice docked to the right side and other newer housing around this bay NW of the historic walled city.:

Then we drove up and up through narrow twisting roads to the high point overlooking Dubrovnik and near the cable car high station. From this point, we could also see part of Bosnia and and Montenegro. The “super star” view was down below with this angle of the harbor and walled city. Beautiful!!!:

We enjoyed reading your Dubrovnik post...pics are great! Gave us a good idea of what to expect and we want to do for sure. We will be there August 28 on the Noordam. Sure hope our weather is as good as yours was...beautiful city. A question re the restaurant...Did you actually make a reservation through the email address? Any problem finding the place? Thanks, Carolyn

THANKS, Carolyn, for the follow-up and nice comments. Should be no problem finding that dining place. You exit out the eastern or Ploce gate (opposite side from the main western gate where most enter) and then walk a few hundred more feet. The lay-out for Dubrovnik is fairly simple and relatively easy in the great historic, walled portion of this city.

From

http://www.portdubrovnik.hr

That website shows on Sunday, August 29 that the Noordam will be one of four ships there that day. The others will be the Spirit of Adventure from Saga, Costa Fortuna and NCI Norwegian Jade. That's about 8,400 passengers in total. The Saga ship is small, while the Costa ship will have about 3,500 passengers. We were fortunate on our day there . . . BOTH with the weather and being the only cruise ship in port.

Here are just a few more of the visuals from Dubrovnik. Great city such interesting history and architecture and beauty.

Along the Dubrovnik wall, here is a view of swimmers enjoying the Adriatic Sea from a hotel location.:

This is a tighter view of the Dubrovnik harbor as it is connected to the Adriatic Sea. Small boats and tourist ships are in this harbor, not the major cruise ships.:

This is a tighter view of the main fortress section that overlooks and protects the main, historic Dubrovnik harbor.:

Here is another sampling of the unique items from within the St. Blaise Church Treasury.:

DubrovChurTreasHandsTight.jpg

As much as we loved Dubrovnik, the only down-side was its over “commercialism”. This one narrow street illustrates the challenge with lots of expected shops and dining “junk” that didn’t add too much to the culture and class for this great city. Sorry for my personal view! I didn’t walk up this type of street.:

Thanks Terry, Can you give me an idea of what to expect to pay for lunch? Carolyn

Of course, much depends on what you order, both for food and drink. I went back and checked the credit card bill. Our lunch total there was $47.58 for the two of us. I kind of had two entrees, my wife much less. No wine or beer. Some bottled water. It is a little confusing there as the pricing was listed in the local currency. The views were "priceless" and/or near a million dollars, etc. Does this help? They had a wide range of food options.

Hi, Terry, your pictures are always been great, both the Baltic ones and this ones. We are planning to go to the Adriatic sea this October and Dubrovnik is one of the port of call. you said you only paid $50 Euro for

'BOTH a panoramic tour across the new bridge, up to several super scenic spots on the mountains above town, learned more on the early 1990's war there, etc. Then we were dropped at the main gate.'

So, what did you tell the taxi driver? Did you tell him to do a panoramic trip and then he will understand what places he should take you to? Or you have to tell him where exactly you want to go to? Thanks!

They had posted signs there in the area where the cabs were lined up on the various different options, including just ten euro for only the trip to Pile Gate or 50 euro for the panoramic trip. When we got in the cab, he pitched for/suggested the panoramic trip, told us the details, we ask some added questions, he had good answers and we were off on our roughly one hour trip. It was a great and super highlight of our visit to Dubrovnik. He knew where to take us, telling us more about the area, answering various questions, having time up at the cable car location, etc.

Thank you so much Terry! We're going to be in Dubrovnik in October and I'm so excited to see this beautiful place.

I'm going to copy your post into our Meet & Mingle so everyone can get a sneak preview of what awaits us this fall!!!

Terry is the 50 euro cost for the Panoramic tour per person, or total for the cab?

That 50 euro cost is TOTAL for the cab. So, per person, it worked out to 12.5 euro each. We had four people or two couples. As I re-call, the cable car costs 10 or 12 euro per person to ride up and back. We saved much given that we got two different great angles/views of Dubrovnik from high above the town and coast, plus the various other sights during this tour. We viewed it as a great bargain and introduction, if you get a good driver who can converse, answer questions, offer that background on this wonderful city and area.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

NC Mtn Boys: Wow. Just...WOW. Thank you for posting. Can't wait for our day there in October. What a gem Dubrovnik is!

Appreciate the kind and nice comments on my visuals. Dubrovnik deserves the great credit. One of the big reasons to do this cruise was the chance to see Dubrovnik and a sampling of the Croatian Coast. It worked out very well' date=' especially with the wonderful weather for that day and not having any other cruise ships in town that day. The panoramic cab tour was also great and positive "luck" that worked so well for us. Seeing Dubrovnik from those high vantage points was very important.

[b']I also was so super glad that I did the wall walk.[/b] That was thrilling and very fascinating. It takes some work and effort, but was spectacularly worth it. Let me know any other questions. I'll re-check through my pictures to see if there are any other major ones that would be helpful to add to this collection/sampling.

Hi Terry,

I am from Youngstown, but moved with my family to Los Angeles as a teenager. I hate to say it, but it was over 30 years ago.

Did you stop in Split? Our upcoming cruise stops in Dubrovnik, Split, Athens and Izmir. Any other enticing photos would be great.

Appreciate the follow-up. No, we didn't stop in Split. We also did Kotor and liked that stop and area. Hopefully, at a future point, we can do more in Split and see more in some of the other places along that scenic and interesting coastal area. Will do some added pictures on Dubrovnik. You can go to this posting to see some of my pictures, tips and ideas in connection with “Athens Tips, Suggestions, Examples to Enjoy!” for many details, ideas and interesting visuals on this great city. Lots of ideas here from me and others experienced with Athens.

About thirty years ago is when things started to slide in the Youngstown area. During WWII and the early 50's, that Mahoning Valley was "it", but things changed for a variety of good and bad reasons. It's shrunk much in population there and is trying to "hang on". Central Ohio, by contrast, is more white collar and growing like a Sunbelt town.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Hi TLC Ohio - Was just reading your post here for Dubrovnik - would you remember the taxi service or driver that you used in Dubrovnik? Your pictures are fantastic - so beautiful! I will be going there September 7th 2011 on HAL Nieuw Amsterdam.

Many thanks, hope to hear back from you if you are able to remember the taxi and/or name of driver it would be much appreciated and thanks for sharing.

Hi, Susan! I don't have the name of the driver or company. It doesn't work that way there in Dubrovnik at the ship docks. They have a large number of cabs there with posted prices going just to the Pile Gate (10 euro), Panoramic (50 euro) or some other nearby locations, etc. The secret is that you need to talk with the potential driver to get some sense of their ability to communicate at a basic/decent level in English, share added info, their personality/style, etc. He shared lots of details and family impacts on the 1991-95 war years, nearby battle areas, etc. If you settle for or have a driver who just "drives", you'll miss lots of the interesting details, not get your questions answered, not get lots of "local flavor" that was very helpful for us, etc. Does this help?

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio
