Where we were docked at Marmaris it was a long walk into the bazaar and through to the beach. We shared a taxi to town and back, yes about €10 per taxi, and well worth it. Not a bad walk but not particularly attractive and time best spent in the old time IMO.

[LEFT]I'm very nosey :o I actually enjoy the walk through the Marina ogling the yachts and designer shops and always stop at those waterfront cafes (before you get to the bazaar area) for a refreshing drink and a sit on the colourful upholstered seating or better still a hammock if you can find one unoccupied. ;)

The beach at Icmeler just round the bay is lovely with soft golden sand and plenty of beach furniture and waiter service from the hotels behind the promenade. Either get the dolmus for a few TL (probably take € now) or the water taxi. Very pretty spot and geared up to tourists with nice hotels and facilities. We really liked it there and still had time to have a look at the 'Genuine Fakes' in the bazaar too! :D

It had been raining on the morning when we were in Marmaris so the weather wasn't really good enough to go to Icmeler where I intended to go and I suppose the threat of rain was one more persuasion to take a taxi. I've got the Shore Ashore map out and we were docked off the map! The taxi did not take us along the sea front so we missed out on the Marina and waterfront cafés in that part of Marmaris. One to look out for on a future visit? :)

What a pity Jakanne that the weather wasn't good for you. Yes, it's a reasonable walk into town as said before perhaps 15/20 minute. There is a cut through a boatyard after the stretch beyond the Marina (very expensive and exclusive no doubt catering to the yachting fraternity - and some of the yachts there are biggies with a capital B!) but after that you walk over a pretty little pedestrian bridge onto the promenade.

This area is beautiful. We always thought it was lovely with the many colourful cafes along there with extensive frontages looking out over all the gulets plying there trade. But we were staggered the last time we went to see how much development had taken place along this stretch. We thought it was fine before but chatting to the cafe owner as we had a drink it transpired 'they' (the Russians he said) had invested millions to revamp the promenade area. It looked like it too!

That involved repaving the whole prom (the part before you get to the castle bit and Attaturk's statue) including the frontages of all the cafes which were perhaps at a guess about 40 feet deep - all in matching attractive pavers. The cafe owner seemed very pleased about that! No wonder!

They were just unwrapping a beautiful fountain feature and had created lots of new raised flower beds with what looked like slate or at least attractive little walls. All the shrubs were new with labels, clearly straight out of the garden centre and just planted. Oh and not forgetting the two small lighthouse features (decorative I thought but perhaps not) on the end of short breakwaters! All top end materials and finish. Looked fantastic and they were still doing the finishing touches.

It had clearly cost a small fortune. And looked really lovely. As we were sitting there a delegation of official looking types in suits and assistants with clip boards walked past obviously inspecting the improvements. The cafe owner nodded and said 'the President'. Now whether that was of the whole country or local official I'm not sure - something could have got lost in the translation but it was definitely a big deal locally. We were left wondering who exactly and why so much had been spent on an area which quite frankly looked perfectly OK to us before. No doubt the expensive yachts had something to do with it. Those with a great deal of money were attracted to and were investing in Marmaris.

So if you go again I'd say it's definitely worth a look in that area even if you don't walk through to the centre from the port and get a taxi - wander back as far as the little bridge to see how attractive that part is. We always stop there on the way in and back again for a drink just to enjoy the ambience - well the drink too of course! :D ;)

We loved Marmaris. The 2nd time we went there we took the ship's cycle ride all around the back streets to Icemeler, had a beach stop then cycle all along the front by the beach back to the ship.

Last year when we went, we did as Kruzseeka did & got off the ship & wandered through the Marina & all through the old town around the bay then caught a water taxi over to Icemeler where we spent the day on the beach. The water taxi itself was a lovely ride across the bay.

I wouldn't however want to stay in Marmaris - it was far too busy, built up & commercialised for us where all the hotels are & not at all a true picture of the 'real' Turkey!

I agree Jules. We love Marmaris too but it's actually that stretch from the port to town, the waterfront cafes and picturesque gulets and Icmeler for the beach which are the highlights for me - I can happily give the town a miss apart from a quick shufti in the bazaar just to make sure I'm not missing something. :D :D

We went to Icmeler on the dolmus but will definitely take you tip of doing it via water taxi next time. I can imagine that's much more scenic (the bus went round the back - nothing much of interest) so would make for an even better experience. All this talk of Marmaris is making me twitchy - could be on the next itinerary! ;)

There was definitely a lot of Russian money in Marmaris. Just docked in front of Spirit, next to the port gates, there was a massive black and white very smart ship/yacht with its own helicopter parked on top!! Richard the CD actually mentioned it before the entertainment that night. I cannot remember its name but he seemed very impressed that he had seen it! :)
