Shak Posted February 13, 2015 #26 Share Posted February 13, 2015 Yes, most of our current luggage has come from STP. In the past year, we've also added 22" Briggs & riley roller and a 22" Eagle Creek roller. (we don't like spinners) The carry-on I use most often is a 20" eagle creek (that isn't made any longer) that I bought a few years ago. Love it. The 20in Velocity is the bag I referred to earlier when I noticed that if I put a folder in he lid pocket the bag was too fat. I think luggage manufactures fudged on the dimensions back then. Here is a classic example . I used to think it was advantageous to have a 20in bag but it gets gate checked on regional flights and the new sizers only care if the bag fits so I went bigger this time. DW hard side is a spinner and she loves it. What didn't you like about them? Leaving for our last cruise I took our luggage out to the car to load. As I was putting a piece in the trunk I heard an odd sound. As I turned around I saw her new spinner going down the small grade in our driveway heading toward the street. Luckily no cars were coming. Barb Nahoumi Posted February 13, 2015 #27 Share Posted February 13, 2015 We have 4 wheeled soft sided luggage which are easy to maneuver side-ways down the narrow aisles of Amtrak trains. They also store away well beneath the beds on cruise ships. We also use a 4 wheeled garment bag for packing suites and dresses.
Hoyaheel Posted February 14, 2015 #28 Share Posted February 14, 2015 (edited) I don't like the inflexibility of hard side luggage and I don't like the way spinners (don't) roll unless you're on flat slippery surfaces like an airport concourse. I bring my luggage in a lot of places with uneven surfaces. Spinners on cobblestone? It's a no go. Just my preference. I don't like spinners. I want light luggage I can maintain myself. And I've never had problems with sizers. If I'm on a regional jet, pretty much anything I would carry other than my under seat personal item is going to be gate checked, and I'm fine with that. I plan for that. I need a 20" because of international regional flights where the carry-on limits are smaller than the US. Rare Lois R Posted February 14, 2015 #29 Share Posted February 14, 2015 Hi...I think you started another thread with exact same question;) http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2164569 I posted a reply on that one but missed this one:D........ I like soft and I like having pockets on the outside and that is impossible with hard sided luggage.

I avoid traveling with my luggage in public if possible so I should be ok. I haven't traveled with the new Tarmac but it seems to travel well on 2 wheels as well as 4. I'll see later the year on our next cruise. Its interesting that the 22' Tarmac AWD weighs the same as my 20" Velocity. Maybe its due to the polycarbonate back of the Tarmac. When I few Air Canada last year they were aggressive with luggage sizes. I think they have since slowed that enforcement. I discovered that Eagle Creek did not include the wheels or handle in their measurement of my Velocity bags. That was ok since my bag was 20" but it made the width go over 9". Things were different back then I guess. Thanks, Shak
pcur Posted February 18, 2015 #31 Share Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) I am torn with deciding what type of luggage I like better. Do you prefer Hard Shell or Soft sided and why? I had a large soft sided suitcase and then in November, purchased a hard shell set of a 28 inch and then a 20 inch carry on size. I feel silly, because I took it to Mexico when I went in early January and I'm not sure if I like it. I found the large suitcase, way too big, didn't mind the little carry on too much. I have a purple one that would probably be a 24 inch size and that is what I am using for my upcoming cruise, along with a small carry on. But I am thinking of getting something different, I'm just not sure what to get. I actually have my set I just purchased up on my local online auction and am getting some good bids on it. I also have very limited selection where I am, all we have is a Walmart. however, going to the city in a couple of weeks. but I think I'm just going to use what I have for now and research some more. But if you could give me some ideas of what you all use and why , I'd appreciate it, thanks!!Kathy We just switched to spinner luggage on our long trip last March/April and it seriously changed our airport experience. We got hard-sided in 3 different sizes, so we have a size depending on where we are going and for how long. On our upcoming trip, which is going to be a packing nightmare, I also got one of these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Adventure-21-Rolling-Backpack-Black/28101427 Note the zigzag bungee cord thing in the front. It's great for putting my ipad in and a folded jacket. This backpack works really well with a large packing cube, because it's one big cavity. I got a VERY large amount of clothes in this thing, and it goes on the plane with me. Combined with a checked spinner, I think we will be in good shape for our rather complicated trip in a few months.
