Elbe water levels

Sorry, but no one can tell you for sure. The Elbe river has no lock and dam system from the Czech border down to Hamburg. Therefore there is no guaranteed river level. Even on the Czech side where there are dams it can be a problem. So it all depends on the weather. Main problem on the Elbe river is low water.

we cruised the Elbe a few years back--the same year as Steamboats--river low enough to keep her boat docked for part of the trip. At one point during our trip a zodiac type craft full of young men was near us. They were horsing around and one fell out, he stood up and pushed the zodiac for a bit before getting back in. Water was only up to his waist. The rivers can be tricky. Pat

could you tell me what month(s) you cruised the Elbe.....I realize the shallowness, but was wondering if certain times of the year are more likely to be low than others...Spring, versus summer, versus fall.

We travelled in the summer. On board we were told that the Chec. Republic controls the water levels of the river--can't speak to the truth of this. Do know that the Viking ships on the Elbe have very shallow drafts, so are able to go in lower water levels. If you go and choose the Fontaine say hello to Oliver the new Food and Beverage mgr. He was on our China trip. Pat
