Cigarette smoke on Epic or Breakaway class?

Hi folks, I'm planning my next cruise (only my 4th ever, and my family's first!) for 2018. Looking predominantly at 7 day itineraries out of Port Canaveral, but also considering Miami if the price is right. Thus far my search has been limited to primarily RCCL Oasis-class and Carnival Breeze/Magic; the reason being that I had read a few reviews reporting a significant degree of smokiness in the public areas on the NCL Breakaway class ships. My family and I have an extreme aversion to cigarette smoke. But most of the reviews I read were written before NCL overhauled their smoking policy. I'm looking for insight into the degree of smokiness on either the Breakaway/Getaway class ships or the NCL Epic from anyone who's sailed on them recently. Thanks!

Have to say these smoking threads are getting a little tiring. Here is my take and I am an x smoker that hates the smell: we are the worst: Just like all ships, you will encounter some smoke order and this goes for all ships if we are to be honest. NCLs had a very similar smoking policy for years. On the Breakaway the only smoking near the pool is an enclosed area on one side of the desk. there is a cigar bar which, most ships now have and smoking is in the mid section of the casino. Yes because of the open casino some smoke may drift a little, but the only people who seem to complain are those who think they should dictate how everyone else behaves. I am sorry to come down so hard on this, but I am tired of all those who gripe about even the least amount of smoke. I don't think anyone has ever gotten ill from smelling a little tobacco order. Does it smell awful? yes! If you are really going to be offended by the smell once in awhile then maybe you should try another line and see how that works. :loudcry:

Thanks all... Not trying to rustle any feathers or rehash something that'd been discussed ad nauseum previously. Just researching something that's important to us and I hadn't thought to do a search for previous discussions on the matter. Sincerely hoping that the next class of NCL ships moves the casino away from other public areas, as apart from the smoke issue, these ships look really fun!

I am not a smoker and never walked through a cloud of smoke anywhere on the ship (Escape or getaway). I don't think smoke is evil. However, you do notice the smell when walking through the casino or in the lobby of the 6/7/8 area under the chandelier - we smelled it dining in the atrium area at le bistro. It wasn't enough to ruin my experience and I wouldn't stay away from the ship because of it, but it is a noticeable smell. My kids, husband, and in-laws commented on it too, so I know it's not just me. I'm sure any ship that allows smoking anywhere will have a place where it smells but it's not a smoke filled environment at all.

I am a non smoker, and if you don't go into the cigar lounge, or in the smoking area on the pool deck, you will be fine. I have walked through the casinos every day, at different hours and there were no clouds of smoke anywhere. If you don't go looking for it, you'll be fine. Enjoy your cruise!

Been on epic several times. Believe me, I do not like smoke but even in the casino it is really ok. I never had the feeling of being in any smoke or smell. This was an issue in the early beginning of the ship but I think they improved their ventilation systems or tomething because it was not smokey at all when I was on the epic.

The casino is the major money maker on every ship, so they won't move it. And as for the smoking issue, it doesn't really exist.

I just got off of the Escape this past Saturday, and the smoke smell was definitely an issue. You could smell it as soon as you enter the Atrium areas in 6/7/8 - it stank right from the start. When the casino was open, the stench was even worse. We stayed out of the casino and out of all the shops in that area because of it. My husband brought money to gamble, but never spent more than 30 minutes tops in the casino (and that was for a slot pull).

That is what we did - stayed far way from the Atrium. If you stay away from that area, you won't notice any smell, as the rest of the smoking areas are outside.

I hate smoke, have never been a smoker, and avoid people in public areas that are smoking in everyday life. However, on the Epic I never noticed it, nor did it bother me. Maybe I was having too great a time to notice? Not sure, but it was not an issue.

The casinos allow smoking so you will always have smoke in them. On the Epic, we noticed a smoke smell in the mid-ship main dining room due to the casino right above it (there are open areas between the floors). The design of the Epic also routes you through the casino to get fore and aft on deck 7 (I think) where the shows are. If you are on the deck below you can't get all the way aft, and have to go up a staircase and walk through the casino, then walk down stairs to continue on. Our solution was to go forward or aft on one of the stateroom decks above the casino, where you can walk fore and aft without any problem. We are fairly sensitive to smoke and were able to work it out and enjoy our vacation.

Other than that, we didn't smell smoke on our balcony, in any of the restaurants, or even on deck where they have a small smoking section set aside on either the port or starboard side. We can easily avoid the smoker's area without any problem and, on our cruise at least, they didn't move the smoking section around, so you always knew where it was.

If you hang out in the casino where smoking is allowed (on any NCL ship), you will smell smoke. If you hang out in the smoking section on deck. You will smell smoke. Otherwise you will be fine. Have a great cruise. All of the ships you asked about are outstanding.

On the Getaway in March there was a distinct odor of smoke. While I am sensitive to the smell it was not over powering but was unmistakable in the casino and into adjacent areas. I expected it based on reviews here but despite it I loved the ship! Very likely considering a 14 day transatlantic on the Breakaway next Oct so obviously not a deal breaker for us, though I can appreciate that it may be for others. That's the benefit of this forum, the ability to make decisions based on personal preferences.

Of note something I wasn't aware of is the smell of smoke on the starboard mid balconies on deck 9. At first I thought it was from balcony smokers then realized it was drifting up from the waterfront smoking area below. Not horrible, but something those sensitive to smoke may want to consider in regards to cabin location.

Don't let the complainers about smoking threads bother you. This is a serious issue that the Cruise lines need to address. Rather, get a backbone and ban smoking in public areas, providing limited smoking areas at the back of the ship.

I dislike it a lot, and my daughter is very sensitive to it. I cannot enjoy the casino if I wanted to, and I have to try to enjoy Shanghai's but often cannot since it's right in the casino area. I cannot walk the promenade near Maltings or even the other side when people are smoking. The smoke often drifts away from the Casino area including up the opening to the floor above. And the amount of smoking on balconies is still a problem. I had an aft balcony and loved it... except I was driven inside half the time by the air currents bring balcony smoke back onto all the aft balconies. There is a poolside smoking area that makes that entire side of the pool unacceptable.

Second hand smoke kills. Cruise line, stop catering to this and get a backbone.

Have you considered Disney? No casino, no smoke. On Celebrity Silhouette the Casino is enclosed, not focal point of the ship open to public, like on Carníval, and apparently on NCL based on some posts here.

Celebrity is no smoking anywhere inside the ship, including casino. Smoking is in designated areas on deck.

Celebrity is close to what you want. They prohibit smoking anywhere indoors, including the casino. I don't know what their outdoor smoking areas are like, as my first sailing with them is in about three weeks. I'll know more then.

How dare you attack smokers, how dare you attack their human rights to smoke and how dare you question it on these forums!!...........opps hint the sarcasm there?

I as a none smoker having never smoked in my life see that I also have rights and that includes not having to inhale anyone else's smoke. If you dare say anything about smoking on here the daggers are straight out. I personally believe smokers should be able to smoke but not on a cruise ship. There are risks that are heightened by smoking a on vessel 100s of miles from land. Smoking is banned on aircraft and other public transport for reasons!!

Just my 2p worth.

You lost all credibility when you said the small area on the pool deck makes the entire side of the ship unacceptable. The ship is 1068 feet long.
