Last year this was a tender port and the ship(odyssey) anchored offshore. Transfer time was about 10 minutes. The landing point on the river was within walking distance of the centre but a bus was also provided.

Its a great city and should not be missed.British,Portugese,Dutch,Indian and Chinese influences .

Hire a trishaw, agree price/time first but an hour is good time for orientation.

Guide on the ship will give you going rate but tends to be higher when a cruise ship is in town.

Shopping in China town is good usual rules re haggling apply.

Best port(along with Port Blair) on last years cruise.

So my advice don't "overplan" just do the city on your own. Enjoy!

Great, this answers everything. The only tour offered that interested us was in the town, and we would much rather do it ourselves at leisure. Did you find it easy to purchase Malaysian currency somewhere for the trishaw and shopping?
