Well, you always here the old cliche saying "don't drink the water" when traveling to Mexico. I'm curious if this is good advice or not while we are in Merida and Progreso? We are first timers and don't want to spend the remainder of our trip sick, lol.

In most restaurants in the Yucatan you will not be served water as a matter of course. If you want water, you will be served bottled water at a cost. The server may ask you if you want chica (small usually 500 ml) or grande (usually a liter). You also may be asked if you want natural (still) or mineral/con gaz (bubbly water). Ice is made with purified water. You will see tap water in the rest rooms, but avoid drinking. The absolute best way to avoid getting food related illnesses is to wash your hands and use hand sanitizer before eating. The food can be clean. If you pick up a nacho chip with your dirty fingers the food can be as dirty as the last thing you touched.
