Snorkeling in Grand Turk

Hello,

We will be in Grand Turk in a month and would like to do some snorkeling. Couple of questions. First, is there a place you can go rent the snorkel equipment then go off on your own? If you do this, are you restricted to where you can go? Second, is there any decent snorkeling areas right off shore near the cruise port? Perhaps Govenor Beach? Last but not least...lots of people have mentioned that it's only about a 15 min walk to Governor Beach from the cruise port....is it safe to go off walking on your own???

We were in Grand Turk on Thursday and it was awesome! You can walk off the ship and there is the best beach with free lounge chairs next to Margaritaville with a huge pool (with swim up bar). You can swim and snorkel right there. They do have a few sets of masks for rent (we bring our own). I think the Governors beach is a little further down but we didn't venture outside the cruise area, even though it appeared to be okay.
