How far from port into Quebec City?

We will be on the Maasdam in September. We would like to do Quebec City on our own. How far is it from the port into the heart of the city? Ease of public transportation?

When you walk off the ship you are in Lower Town in Old Quebec. It is a great walking city and you don't really need public transportation unless you are going to somewhere other than Old Quebec.

We love walking cities and Quebec is one of the best. Actually from where you dock you walk across the street and you are in Old Town. You can walk or tale the Finicular (sp ?) to the newer part of the city. It is a bit of a climb up the hill !

Our ship overnighted in Quebec City and we would just come and go from the ship because it is so close!! If you look at the picture in my signature (below) that is take from the ferry that crosses the river. Our ship (Eurodam) on the left and Maasdam on the right Quebec City in the back ground. It doesn't get much closer!!

The ferry crosses the St-Lawrence river and goes to the city of Levis on the southern bank (it's a short ride).

It is used daily by folks who live /work on one side of the river or the other (in the old sections of town) rather than going all the way the long way around and taking the bridges.

You can take the ferry as a pedestrian if you would like to explore the town of Levis.

I think there is plenty to see / explore in Old Quebec City.

There is a website with info on events & attractions in Old Levis, but I think it's only in French...

You can't go directly to the parade grounds. In order to attend the Changing of the Guard you'll need to be on one of the Citadelle tours and you'll be escorted to the parade grounds by a tour guide. It's been ten years since we've been there, but the way I remember it there was plenty of room around the parade grounds for everyone to have a front row view. The only trick was to make sure that you're on one of the tours that includes the cermony.

Also, if you're planning to walk from the ship to the Citadelle be prepared for a *very* steep up hill climb.

We didn't even get off the ferry. We just got a round-trip ticket and stayed on. Mostly wanted some nice pictures of the city and some with our ship in the foreground. I think it was worth the few dollars is cost.

There is lots to see and do in old Quebec even if you miss the changing of the guard. If you do a google search you should find some plans for do it yourself walking tours.

We got there between 8:15 and 8:30 and all the tours that included the ceremony were sold out except the very last one. If you get there after 8:30 I would expect that you'd be too late.

Don't be concerned about getting there too early. If you have time to kill before your tour there are several interesting sites that are very close to the entrance to the Citadelle. And after the ceremony is over don't rush off. I you wait around afterwards you can have your picture taken with Batisse, the regimental mascot.;)

Give it a try as see what happens. My luck is notoriously bad so I’m sure you’re chances of getting to the ceremony would be much better than mine. And even if you don’t get to the ceremony the tour of the Citadelle is very good and it includes the best view in Quebec from the top of Cape Diamond.

I'll have to get my travelling partners to put on their running shoes. Last year in Athens we all ran (according to them uphill both ways) to catch the changing of the guard.

I'm bummed -- it looks cool. We're on the last cruise of the season, November 3rd. The changing of the guards is only in summer. It ends the first Monday in September. :(

On the bright side, we may see some snow :eek:

We will be taking the SOS Oct 19th 2015 cruise from Quebec to FT Laud and what can we expect regarding the weather in Quebec for mid Oct. Since we also will overnight on the 18th before disembarking on the 19th, we plan to do more sight seeing. Coming from Calif we will arrive late in the day or early evening so thinking of coming in on the 16th.

I think we are passing on the ferry and will try to catch the changing of the guard and then a tour to the falls. That should put us back in Quebec mid afternoon with the rest of the afternoon, evening and the following morning to enjoy the city. Any other advice?
