The old town is great, you can do the history walking tour either on your own or with a guide.

Here is a list of things to do from Trip Advisor. https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attractions-g186299-Activities-Southampton_Hampshire_England.html

You could also visit Highclere Castle which is the house used in Downtown Abbey or go to Portsmouth and visit the attractions there.

Maritime Museum on the waterfront near ferry terminal is good. Las time I was there they had a Titanic expo upstairs. You could also go for a ride across to ye olde Isle of Wight for a few hours, as we did, great views of shipping across Southampton Water. Plenty of Retail therapy in Southampton as well.

You're a little out-of-date there, Uncle Les - the Maritime Museum has moved to a swanky new home called Sea City Museum, adjoining the Civic Centre. http://seacitymuseum.co.uk/

Its old home, The Wool House, originally built in 1300-and-something, is now a pub with microbrewery. Good selection of real ales and decent pub-grub. http://www.dancingmanbrewery.co.uk/

100 yards up Bugle Street from the Wool House is Tudor House and Gardens https://tudorhouseandgarden.com/

Use the links on that website for old-town Southampton's admittedly-few other sights, including the Medieval Merchant's House (turn off Bugle Street alongside the Duke of Wellington pub), the Town Walls and Gates, including the Bar Gate. Do bear in mind that Southampton was heavily bombed during WW2, and "old town" is a mix of old and new.

There are often weekend events around the Bar Gate, but there's no worthwhile daily or weekly market in Southapton

The city's main shopping street (Above Bar) and West Quay Mall are on the north side of the Bar Gate.

Holiday Inn (that's the one on Herbert Walker Avenue by City Cruise Terminal, not the Hol Inn Express's which are on the city outskirts) is alongside Mayflower Park on the bottom map of this page

https://tudorhouseandgarden.com/planning-your-visit/explore-old-town/old-town-walk/

Old Town and the West Quay Mall are no more than a 10 to 15 minute walk from your hotel.

So there's certainly enough in Southampton to keep you interested for a lazy day or more.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, Winchester is only about 20 minutes by frequent direct trains.

http://www.visitwinchester.co.uk/things-to-do

Or for a very full day, consider Portsmouth with its Historic Dockyard and Ships. About 50 minutes by train (direct hourly, or half-hourly including one simple change) to Portsmouth Harbour station, which is the end of the line. It's just a five minute walk to the dockyard.

But it's a very very full day, and even then you won't see everything.

Even if old ships aren't your thing, Portsmouth & its conjoined twin Southsea have lots more to offer. Southsea promenade has great views across to the Isle of Wight, a hovercraft service to the Island, a small seafront castle dating from Henry V111, A D-Day museum and much more.

Appreciate the options for Southampton.....will be there about a day and a half before catching our cruise. Of course we have jet lag to deal with also especially on the first day of arrival!

You guys only have a short flight from the US of A, try 23 hrs, plus transit time, refuel/change of aircraft whatever, Sydney to LHR.:( All up it can be a 30 hour nightmare, even at the pointy end !!

Enjoy your adventure.:halo:
