Our Wedding onboard the Carnival Imagination!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone.

I've finally finished my review! Whew! It's a bit of a read, but I didn't want to leave out any details that may be helpful to future brides.

I'll be doing this in multiple posts, so stay tuned!

The Basics

My husband Rick and I were married on the Carnival Imagination on April 19, 2013, during her 3-day sailing to the Bahamas. It was an embarkation day wedding out of the Port of Miami. We had 20 sailing and 5 non-sailing guests. My twin sister was my MOH, her 3-year old son was the ring bearer, and Rick’s Dad was his Best Man.

Our colors were teal, gold, and ivory. Rick and his Dad wore tuxes from JC Penney. The tuxes were a steal at about $115 total for a jacket and pants. I’m not a big fan of the ruffled shirts, so they just wore regular white shirts with teal ties and pocket squares that I ordered from Dessy. The ring bearer wore a matching tie, too.

Rick also wore black “GROOM” socks that I ordered from one of my favorite sites ever, Sock Dreams. The “BRIDE” socks were too thick for me to wear with my shoes. :(

My Dress, Etc.

I wore Allure 8764. At my final fittings, there were issues with my bustier showing through the keyhole in the back, but the seamstress fixed that perfectly!

My veil came from the same boutique as my dress. It was fingertip length with lace appliqué spaced out along the edge.

I wore a simple gold sash I bought for $10 off of ebay, and paired that with a $20 brooch off of Etsy.

My sparkly gold shoes came from DSW. With a 2.75 inch heel, they were comfortable enough to wear all day!

Craft Projects

Pearl bouquet

“Just Married” banner for the cake table

“Thank You” banner for the favor table

Our ring box, guest book, and pen holders

Huppah! We made our huppah using a tablecloth, mitten clips, ribbon, and fishing rods from the dollar store. All of the huppahs I’d seen online cost hundreds and hundreds of dollars and weren’t portable. Ours was light and easy to carry, and only cost $20. Score!

Etsy Finds

Flower pens

Brooch for my sash

Boutonnieres

Pearl bracelet wrist corsages for my MOH and the mothers/grandmothers (you can just see it on my sister's wrist)

Alrighty! Let's see how this goes!

Wednesday, April 17 - Two days before the Wedding

Off to Miami we go! We flew Jet Blue from Reagan National to Fort Lauderdale. I wore my bride socks and my "Cruise Bride" hoodie, which I unfortunately failed to get a decent picture of.

Since Jet Blue couldn’t guarantee closet space for my dress, I packed it with my veil in a carryon size suitcase. Everything we needed for the wedding (shoes, tux, ring box, cake topper, banners, etc.), fit into my personal item and Rick’s carryon and personal item.

To ensure that we boarded early so that my dress wasn’t in any danger of getting gate-checked, I booked us seats towards the back of the plane so that we’d be in the first general boarding group (Jet Blue boards from the back). For even better odds, I requested pre-boarding when we got to the gate and explained that I had a wedding dress with me. The gentleman there was very understanding and let us preboard. So my dress made it onto the plane with everything else.

We booked QLS to get us from Fort Lauderdale to our hotel, the Comfort Suites Miami Airport North. We booked this particular hotel since they offered complimentary buffet breakfast, a shuttle to and from the Miami Airport for guests flying in there, and had a reasonable rate.

Thursday, April 18 – Welcome Dinner!

Folks had the whole day to do whatever they wished. I spent the day finishing and handing out our Welcome Bags. My mother-in-law and sister had bought some items they thought would be nice to give. In all, our bags included: tropical-themed hand sanitizer (even found an “Ocean” scent specifically for men); a notepad with pen; Biscoff cookies; Trident gum; Bahamian Rum cake recipe card, monogram tissue packet, and a highlighter.

My mother-in-law stopped by our room to show us the glass that she’d got for Rick to break. It was beautiful! I almost didn’t want to give it back! She plans to send out the broken pieces to a company that makes art out of broken glasses from weddings. So cool!

I also used our free time to pack up all of our wedding stuff and hand it off to my sister and friend who would be handling set-up for the wedding.

For the evening, my in-laws had arranged a Prenuptial Welcome Dinner at Crazy About You, with private shuttle pickup for all of us. The restaurant is right on the water, and the service was pretty good. They had preselected the menu, which included red and white wine with dinner – a very nice touch!

Friday, April 19 – Wedding Day!!!

Getting Ready!

Today’s the day!

I woke up around 630, showered and had breakfast. Keyla from eyecreationsbykeyla.com, came to do my makeup. She charged $100, was prompt, and did an excellent job. I didn’t book her until maybe 2 weeks before the wedding (found her through Cruise Critic!) since I had planned to just wear some lipstick and eyeshadow and call it a day. But I’m so glad I booked Keyla! I received so many compliments – and still do – on what a great job she did.

Getting to the Port

Our hotel confirmed a private shuttle for my guests to take us to the port that was to leave a 9:45.

My guests were all on-time at 9:15 in the lobby, but our departure was delayed. We didn’t leave until 10:05. I was a bit stressed about being late but really tried to keep calm about it. It was going to be a great day no matter what! As it turned out, our delayed shuttle didn’t matter much anyway. Read on.

At the Port

We arrived at the port around 1040 or so. We dropped off our bags with the porters (a bit of a chaotic mess but the porter was a good sport) and rushed through security. My dress had to go through the scanner, which I thought was pretty funny! We then headed upstairs to check in. It was then that we met Heydes, our onsite coordinator, and Peter, our officiant.

Heydes is absolutely wonderful! I hope that future Imagination brides are lucky enough to have her. Two of my guests had arrived separately from us because they drove. They told me later that Heydes met them, explained how the day would go, and was very pleasant. I was so pleased to hear that, especially since they had to wait almost a full 30 minutes without us because we were late. I was glad to hear they were treated well.

Waiting to Board

After Rick and I checked in, Heydes escorted us to our waiting area. It was there that we met Peter, our officiant. He was great! I could not have been more pleased with him. We had a rather personalized ceremony and had provided our own vows, so Peter reviewed all of that with us. We also made a huppah to be used for a special part of the ceremony, and Peter wanted to make sure he understood how that would work.

Sidebar: I got a call about 4:30 the day before our wedding from TWE asking about our huppah. They wanted to know if it was stationary, if it was small enough to fit through the security scanner, how would it be set up…? I was a bit miffed because I had noted in our paperwork that we had a portable huppah and no one had any questions until less than 24 hours until the ceremony? It rubbed me the wrong way, but everything got sorted out in the end.

Anywho. We didn’t actually get to board until just a little after noon because Customs was delayed in clearing the ship. We found out later on that there was some stragglers on the ship who were trying to extend their vacation as long as possible and delayed the departure process. So please, all you folks reading this: when you decide that you want just an extra 30 minutes on your cruise vacation, please think of the stressed-out bride and groom who may be waiting to board, starting to panic more and more as their prep time slips away. Lol!

And – We’re Off!

It’s 12:05 and we’re boarding the ship! Woo-hoo! I'm speeding up the gangway carrying my dress over my head. Rick let me step onto the ship first so that I could be the first one on out of 2000 cruisers. Hey – when is THAT going to happen again?!

Our wedding ceremony was to take place in the Library, so myself, hubby, MOH, BM, and huppah holders all went there to rehearse. Also at that time, two friends went to go set up for the reception. I thought they would have to apply the cupcake wrappers and cake toppers, but apparently Carnival took care of that. Awesome!

After the rehearsal, we and our witnesses signed our ketubah. Rick and his Dad then went to our oceanview room to get ready. I went to my friend’s room; she’d booked a suite, so I had plenty of space to get ready. :D

Here's a pic of the Library set up with the columns and flowers; my nephew/the ringbearer, wanted a window seat. :)

Friday, April 19 – Wedding Day!!!

Gettin’ All Purdy

My sister, bless her heart, was in fast forward mode getting me dressed. It was probably 12:30 at this point, and the ceremony was scheduled for 1:00. She got me dressed, then rushed to get herself dressed (which she did in a flash – must have been that military training, Lol!). While I was still getting ready, though, our photographer Ram came knocking to take some photos, but I wasn’t ready for public consumption yet!

Unbeknownst to me, the poor guy waited outside for another 10 or 15 minutes. We noticed him again when my sister and friends left to go to the Library. In my defense, I thought he’d left and would come back.

While Ram and I were taking photos in the suite, Heydes came to check on me to see if I was ready – and I was. Then she called the guys – they weren’t. Lol! I couldn’t for the life of figure out what was taking them so long. I found out later that Rick’s Dad (he’s in his early 70s), was a slow mover. Understandable when you’re 70.

By this point, I was really worried about starting late and losing reception time. I asked Heydes what time it was. She said “Don’t worry about it. Everything’s going to be just fine.” Don’t you just love her? That really put me at ease.

It’s Almost Time!

After Ram took some more photos, Heydes took me upstairs to the Library; I got some oohs and aahs and congrats as we waited for the elevator. Ram also took the opportunity to snap some more photos.

The Library is situated in such a way that there’s a corner to turn just before you enter it, so that’s where I stood. As I approached from the side, I could see cruisers at the bar on the deck below looking up at me. And some others on the other side of me tried to get a peek inside the Library on their way past, but Peter politely asked them to go the other way.

The mothers and their escorts, my MOH, and the ring bearer were all lined up outside waiting to go in, so I stood there waiting for my cue.

It’s Time!!!

Then Peter said to our guests “Please rise.” And Pachabel’s Canon in D started. That’s my cue! I peeked around the corner, and Peter gave me the nod that it was showtime.

For a few reasons, I decided that I didn’t want my Father to walk me down the aisle. My Grandfather, who was the man who raised me, would have done it had he not passed away 2 years ago. So on my brooch bouquet, I pinned a small picture of him so that he could walk me down the aisle, after all.

I walked halfway by myself, Rick came to meet me, and we walked the rest of the way together. He was all sniffly – it was so cute! And I found out later from EVERYONE that I had a smile plastered to my face the entire time.

The Ceremony

So here’s an interesting tidbit: Carnival has the couples face their guests, which we heard from a lot of people really added to the ceremony. Peter stood in the middle of the aisle and presided from there. It was so wonderful to be able to look out and see the smiling faces and happy tears of our closest family and friends.

As I mentioned earlier, we wrote our own ceremony, which included acknowledgements of loved ones who’ve passed, handing roses to the mothers/grandmothers, and a few Jewish elements.

It’s common at Jewish weddings to read “The Seven Blessings.” So we chose that time to bring out the huppah. The huppah represents the marriage home open on all sides to family and friends. It also symbolizes the support the home needs: from the couple within and family and friends outside. We were very deliberate about who held up our huppah: my sister and Rick’s Dad were two; we also chose my sister’s husband and Rick’s sister’s husband as a way to represent the blending of our extended families into one.

During that reading, my nephew, the ringbearer, started having a meltdown. He was in the care of Grandma (my sister’s mother-in-law) since Mommy and Daddy were at the front holding the huppah. First he was banging a toy on the chair in front of him. Then when his Grandma tried to get him to stop, the whining started. And when that didn’t get the reaction he wanted, the screaming started. Grandma had to take him out at that point. His screaming was so loud that our videographer had to edit out the last sentence of the reading because he couldn’t completely edit out the screaming.

I had braced myself for something like that happening so really had to laugh about it. My sister felt bad because she’d asked her mother-in-law to take him out before he reached that point. Oh, well. It makes for a fun memory.

At the end of the ceremony, Rick broke a glass (it was beautiful, by the way) and everyone shouted “Mazel Tov!”

Rick and I walked back up the aisle as husband and wife, then stole a private moment and a kiss just outside the Library doors that Ram caught. You can’t see our faces, but there’s so much happiness and excitement and “we did it!” wrapped up in that picture for me (the last one).

That's it for now! On the docket for tomorrow: our reception and our photography and videography experiences.

After all this time on this board, I haven't yet figured out how to do multiquotes. :o But I'd like to thank all of you for your well-wishes and compliments! I felt absolutely gorgeous on the day of my wedding, and I hope all you future brides do, too!

Aaaand I just noticed that my photos didn't show up for that last segment. I promise I'm not this tech challenged in real life! Lol!

I have goosebumps! I'm so excited to read the rest of this review and see more pictures!!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story with the rest of us. You are so beautiful! Congrats! I LOVE your dress! I really wanted a lace key hole dress, I think they are so gorgeous and timeless...but wouldn't you know it, I went with the exact opposie silk fit and flare, LOL.

I got that faster pass thing this time.. and I booked row 1.. Glad to here everything worked out for your Dress.. Mines would NEVER fit in my bags, lol.

The Hotel~ It's funny U said U stayed there... I was wanted to change Hotels and NO one wanted to move :( They had some great perks :0)

Welcome Bags~ Did U get those from OT.. I seen them and Liked them, but all the Reviews say they arent BIG, or is enough space.. What were UR thoughts?

Honeeeeeeeeeey I am LOVING thi Review and the Pix...

Yup - got the bags from Oriental Trading Co. They're kinda flimsy but held up to what we had inside. We didn't really have anything too heavy. I'd call them medium-sized; we had more than enough space. I should have a few left over. If you email me your address I'd be happy to send you a 'sample.' Haha!
