Cobh/Kinsale

We'll be arriving in Cobh and would like to take a taxi to Kinsale, where we plan to wander around and likely have some lunch. Would it be best to book this in advance or are there sufficient taxis at the dock so that we could arrange this when we arrive? Any idea of what this might cost? There are two of us.

A taxi will cost you around €70 from Cobh to Kinsale. It's about 32 miles. Another €70 back from Kinsale to Cobh. that's per taxi, which will take up to 4 passengers (remember the cars here will be 'compact').

there may be enough taxis at the pier, but there would be no harm in booking one in advance.

This is what we did, its a great deal. You have around 2 hours in Blarney and can choose to go up the castle or not. I actually enjoyed the grounds around the castle more then the castle itself.

Then off to Kinsdale where we had about 1.5 hours, we grabed some lunch there as well.

I concur Butler tours (ecouch) are great. They do have smaller vans if you want to arrange a smaller group and go where you want. Ask Ian he can arrange anything you want

We also booked one of the day tours and I loved Kinsale. It is a quaint little town that I still think about (I loved it so much) and took fabulous photos. Enjoy!

cannot remember what we both ordered but know we loved every bite -

it was a lovely day so we sat outside & enjoyed the whole atmosphere plus the food !!! ;)

No, there is another occupant there now 'The Pantry'.

I will be down in Kinsale in a couple of weeks and will report back if the chippie has relocated.

Dino's fish and chips was excellent and you can sit outside and eat your lunch along the harbor...Kinsale was not a favorite town in my mind but we loved the Butler Tour all day from COBH

Make sure you actually dock in Cobh, not "Ringaskiddy" as we did, as that will complicate things for Kinsale. Ringaskiddy is the overflow port for Cobh, and there is little there. Even cabs are limited. Look at this site to see where you dock: (says 2010 but is really 2014):

If you dock there and your ship offers an excursion to Kinsale, I would take it. Then again, I ended up choosing to go to Cork last year and really enjoyed it, so it's all good...

Speaking of Kinsale, I was doing some research for our cruise in August and found that it's National Heritage Week while we're in Ireland. This walking tour by Don & Barry sounds fun:

train from cobh to Cork, walk to bus station, bus to Cashel (1 hour 40 mins). Couple of hours in Cashel and then reverse journey.

He was great. He picked us up at the dock and we had him all day. You can book him for 8-9 hours for €300 and that is a vehicle that can hold 6 people. We had just two of us and it was perfect since we could decide when and where to go. We were the first in Blarney Castle and the first two people to kiss the Blarney Stone with his help getting us there before the crowds.

He is a great person to talk to and really helps understand the entire area. We had the greatest meal in Kinsale after he told us where to eat!!

Do you remember how much you paid? (On the website they say that the tours "starts" at 19.99 , but actually this one is supposed to be 34.99 Euros)

Here's another vote for Butlers. For lunch, if you try the White House pub for fish and chips, don't forget to try a pint or two of Red Rebel beer. Enjoy..

They haven't. It's still there. Not sure what to think about this. They told me it was the early bird rate with a limited number of seats at that price but, even tours as far away as September are $34.99. One trip in 2016 is $29.99. I think it looks too much like "bait and switch". Wish they would change it. But we may still book with them.
