Tipping question

You can have the best of both worlds! You can go to the casino and get a cash advance from your shipboard account, which is billed as an entertainment expense. No extra credit card fees for a cash advance. Then you can use that to personally hand out the tips to thank the folks who worked hard making your cruise a great experience.

Have A Great Time On Your First Cruise!!!

Yes, you can put all of the tips on your shipboard charge.

You could also run to your local bank on Friday and Saturday and get some cash. The fine print in your Celebrity cruise brochure has a list of suggested tips. Add in some $1 tips (coffee cabin service and showing you to the cabin) and $2 tips (lunch or light meal cabin service), plus airport, motel, dockside baggage handling episodes (For two people, I think $5 is probably a minimum tip for handling cruise luggage for two people.) If you find a favorite bartender along the way, an extra $5 might be nice.

OK, if your pre-cruise weekend is filled with more-important getting ready activities, the casino on your ship will be a place where you can also get tip money. Show your shipboard card and ask for whatever you want. If you need all of the cash for tips, don't spend much time in the casino after you get your money. It tends to disappear rather quickly.

We personally like to handle all of our tips in cash. I don't think we need to involve the cruise line in during our tipping. However, the tipping methodology is a personal thing.

Soooo, go have a great time!!! Tip as you see fit and how you see fit.

Above all, have a great time and remember, "You are only trying to please yourself on a cruise and the folks around you are secondary.

Above all, do not be decisive at meal time. If you are unsure about a selection for appetizer, soup, salad, entree or dessert; ORDER BOTH.

Brownsf:

You can also fill out a request early in the week for your tips to be charged to your ship board account. I understand they give you a voucher so you can personally hand it to your great waiters, etc. (and add more dollars if you wish to tip above the suggested amount).

Hope you have a great 1st cruise. Celebrity is a great cruise line!! ENJOY! icon_biggrin.gif

We charged our standard tips to our account and used the envelopes provided to some extra to the people that we felt went above and beyond (everyone we actaully has contact with) icon_smile.gif These guys WORK hard for their money and they do so with a smile always. We got some $2 bills from the bank before we left for tipping room service ect... The $2 bills are kinda different and fun. We had maybe $20-$30 in those. Have a great time! Mercury is the best! Oh my, that feeling that comes over you when you see her for the first time from your approach. With us it was over the Golden Gate. I get goosebumps just thinking about it now. Our waiter was Tomaz. Table 676. He was fabulous. ~Christine

Love that tip calcualtor. Thank you. Too bad I can't have it with me. I don't know NOW who I will want to tip more money until my cruise next week. What is customary for the wine steward? We will be bringing our own.

Hey Sparky!

It should be available from the internet cafe on the ship.... but I'm not sure it's worth paying what is it, 50 cents a minute to use?

Sparky,

You will pay a corkage fee (around $12) for each bottle of your own wine that you want served at your dining table. It is not necessary to tip over and above this amount.

Wine that is opened (and consumed) in the privacy of your stateroom is not, naturally, subject to any corkage fee.

Brownsf, we'll see you on board icon_smile.gif Here's what I do: I get travelers checks to cover the tip amount & maybe some extra for walking-around $. Put it in the room safe. Last day, I join the fellow relaxed cruisers at the "bank" line to turn the travelers checks into appropriate cash amounts for the tip breakout. I just don't like showing up with all that cash .. the travelers checks make me feel safer.

Already been to the bank today, in fact, and am ready to go in that regard icon_smile.gif

Thank you for the replies regarding the wine steward. I know about the corkage fee. So I do not need to tip over and beyond that fee? Good to know. I also have heard that often the wine steward doen't charge it more than once sometimes. So if that's the case, I will tip him on the side, correct? In doing that, do I hand it to him at the end of the cruise (once I see how my bill is charged)? I am thinking there is not an envelope for him.Are there extra envelopes available? ALso, someone mentioned slipping the bartender some $$$ if you want...is it OK for that to be done within view, or is it a "sly" kind of thing? This is our very first cruise, as I am sure you can tell.

Oh, and so if we are sitting at at table in the bar and a waitress brings our drinks, she gets tipped as we leave?

At cruise-end, I usually tip a cocktail waiter(ress) and/or a bartender if they gave particularly frequent and good service. Also a tip for the wine folks is not out of line if you really value their advice. You can get extra envelopes at Guest Relations.

Sparky...you can tip the waiter/waitress extra in the lounge if you want.....but there is a 15% gratuity added to all adult beverages icon_wink.gif.
