Vancouver Hotel Advice Needed

Re the Hampton - probably an oversight - it's a couple blocks further - across from BC Place Stadium.

I'm sure PD will be along to give you his thoughts on it.

I do not see the Hampton on your list. Do you think that hotel is ok? I booked it for next summer. Seemed like a nice place and close to everything. THanks for your thoughts on this.

Nothing wrong with the Hampton Inn at all, and the even run a free shuttle to the dock on cruise days. It's across the street from the Football stadium; but games don't run that late, and that part of Robson Street gets pretty quiet after 11pm so I wouldn't expect noise issues. From the airport it will be about $35 for a taxi, or $9/ea for Skytrain to Vancouver City Centre followed by a 7-8 block walk along Robson to your hotel.

Quite a few inexpensive food options not far away on Robson Street, and some of the city's best restaurants are 6-8 blocks away in Yaletown.

How much will a taxi from the airport cost? Any good restaurants around there? We are more of the casual sports bar and grill type people.

What are some good inexpensive food options? Have never been to Vancouver and looking forward to staying after our cruise. I know we want to rent bikes at Stanley park. Any good suggestions of things to do, places to eat would be very much appreciated. I want to get the most of our 24 hours there. Also, if we do the Skytrain then it is a 7 -8 block walk to catch it from the Hampton? We will have a lot of luggage so I guess a taxi it is.

No problem. From the Delta Suites to the terminal is a short (4-5 block) walk. Exit the hotel onto W.Hastings, turn left walk 2½ blocks to Howe and turn right and the cruise ship terminal is right there. You want to make sure you walk to Howe and don't try and cut it short by taking Granville, becuase due to a quirk of the streets, you'll end up with a lot of steps in your path, W.Hastings to Howe to Canada Place; level and slightly downhill....

From the airport a taxi will be $35 +tip, or take Skytrain ($9/ea) to Waterfront, exiting using the "Granvile St Exit" (right on the platform, the opposite end of the tunnel that goes into the station itself). That puts you at W.Hastings & Granville, 2 blocks from your hotel.

Lots of places to eat nearby. Rogue (at Waterfront Station), and Steamworks (next to Waterfront on Cordova) would be two good choices, fairly casual, but probably not the best if you want to catch 'the game'.

If you're looking for more toward the sports side, The Shark Club (which is currently closed for renos but will be reopening soon) on Georgia @ Cambie (in the Sandman Hotel), Malone's at Seymour and W.Pender just around the corner from your hotel; or Moose's down Under (literally take the stairs DOWN) on W.Pender at Hornby. At Moose's I can highly recommend the meatloaf sandwich, it's good solid pub food.

If you're feeling adventurous for an interesting lunch place, there's an inexpensive and quite good Japanese place called "Kita no Donburi" on Seymour St, right around the corner from your hotel; and a great falaffel place on Seymour a little further up called the Bahgdad Cafe.

Lastly, there right across the street from your hotel is Harbour Centre, and there's a food court on the lowest level; the cream of the crop in there is probably Rice & Spice (Indian);

Along Robson my cheap and cheerful gotos would be Back 40 (more of a pub), Memphis Blues (BBQ), Coco Noodle (chinese noodle dishes), Falaffel Maison, Viet Sub (best Bahn Mi in the city), and India Gate. Some of those places (Falaffel, VietSub, CocoNoodle) are really more casual quick lunch places, but the food is solid.

If you're looking for fancier, along Beattie (just past Stadium Station) there's a great belgian place Chambar; and if you walk into the yaletown district (head along Beattie past the stadium) to approximately Nelson and Mainland there are a ton of great restaurants, Glowbal, Bluewater and many many more.

From your other posts, this was for a trip in May 2015, no? Don't worry too much about the airfare - that is a LOT of time for the airline to change their schedule. If, or more likely this far in advance, WHEN they do then: a) the new timing may be better for you; b) if it isn't then traditionally all airlines allow rebooking of flights without a change fee when THEY make an alteration. Just put a note in your diary to check the flight schedules on the airline website every couple of months.

 

If you want to plan for the worst, put aside ~$7 a week in a jar and you'll be able to afford the change fee by next May. That's just one Starbucks trienti mochafrappachino unless Georgia is a lot cheaper than here!

Martincath, You were right!:) The airline did make a change to our scheduled arrival time, it was only a 20 minute difference and didn't qualify us for a free change, but did allow me to make the change to the flight I really wanted without a "change fee" only paid the very slight difference in price. Thank you again for your reply to my post - I would not have known that I could make a change this way. I am very, very happy now, all plans are perfect and just have to wait for May!

Is it Beattie St or is Beatty Street?

There is also a new White Spot restaurant at Dunsmuir and Homer - whitespot.ca - that chain has been around for 86 years and is a favorite for many generations of Vancouverites.

The Pan Pacific is one of the hotels in Vancouver that has won a five star distinction - fabulous setting - it sits atop the Cruise terminal - no need to go outside to board the ship - just take the elevator or stairs down to the terminal.

Not next door, on top of. To get to the cruise terminal, just take the elevator down to the P1 level, and the cruise terminal is one floor below street level

My bad, I always do that; have a friend with the name spelled IE; and the street is with a Y. I should know better given I used to work on BeattY street.

Martincath, You were right!:) The airline did make a change to our scheduled arrival time, it was only a 20 minute difference and didn't qualify us for a free change, but did allow me to make the change to the flight I really wanted without a "change fee" only paid the very slight difference in price. Thank you again for your reply to my post - I would not have known that I could make a change this way. I am very, very happy now, all plans are perfect and just have to wait for May!

Glad the flight situation resolved itself so early. As to poutine (this is the dish, a place specialising in it would be a poutinerie) it's widely available across Canada and as long as you enjoy each of the component parts (fries, gravy, cheese) I'd certainly recommend trying it!

Here in Vancouver there are a few poutineries and lots of pubs, bars, restos offer it. Search this board and Canada board for a lot of mentions - in case that doesn't work for you google Fritz European Fry House and La Belle Patate both of which have downtown locations. I'd link them directly but I'm on my tablet which is very annoying to add hyperlinks with...

Yummm, both look like great places. Thank you both. We are staying at the Best Western on Drake Street, so it looks like the Fritz would be the closest. I have to try it, even though it does sound like an odd combination, the reviews are convincing.

The Hampton airport location certainly runs frequent shuttles to YVR (pretty sure it's available 24/7, not just until 11pm) - but the downtown location, to which SB was referring in his note you quoted, offers a local shuttle for dropoffs (no pickups) around the downtown area only.

People frequently ask for a downtown hotel with a shuttle service to/from YVR and as far as any local poster is aware there is no such animal in Vancouver. If you stayed at the downtown Hampton recently and can confirm that they do actually offer a YVR shuttle now us locals would definitely like to know that so we can pass along the info...

Your right . . . there is no such animal. I had read this information somewhere, so I called the Hampton today; no shuttle service is available from YVR. Sorry about the misinformation!
