Anyone find a deal?

We are cruising Sept. 5 on the Sensation and will be driving to NOLA from Memphis. Last year we stayed at the Hilton Riverside with a $99.00 cruising package but that pkg is now $229.00.

Anyone know of a decent (doesn't have to be anything fancy) hotel that has parking for the duration of the cruise? We would like to be fairly close to the French Quarter.

Thanks

Pam

Recently booked a park and cruise special with Holiday Inn - French Quarter at 124 Royal Street. It is located in the FQ between Iberville & Canal. The rate is $129 per night and parking for the 1st night is $23. You can park there up 7 additional days at no extra charge. Their website is at http://www.ichotelsgroup.com and their phone is 504-529-7211. It is so nice to find a place that will actually honor their posted rate.

The Holiday Inn Convention Center Blvd has a simular deal. The rate is based on when you are coming in. The hotel is very close to the pier. We have read where others have walked to the pier from there. You get the 7 nights free parking (at the Fulton Street Garage). You have to pay for the one night parking of your stay. If you use the Fulton Garage for that night also (it is right next door) then you will pay Fulton directly $12. If you stay in the hotel parking that night it is like $22 or $23 for that night. Their site is at http://holiday-inn-select-new-orleans-convention-center.com/html/new_orleans_hotel_discounts_.html.

I just called the Fulton Street Garage (504-566-1010) and they informed me that once you park your car in the lot you have to pay for each time you enter. So if you plan on driving anywhere after you checkin then you would have to pay the $12 again. It would be best to just do things close by or use the shuttle they provide.

Also - you have to pay for the first day parking when you park - then the next morning you have to take over the voucher that the hotel gives you for the next 7 days.

I went ahead and booked a room through priceline.com but I was wondering if anyone knows if you can use the Fulton Street Garage for the night before the cruise???? We are staying at the Marriott but their parking rate is $24.00 + tax.

I assume you can pay the $12.00 to the Fulton Street Garage but once I go back the next day, will we be able to catch the shuttle with them or should I just plan to take a taxi from the hotel ?

Thanks!

I called the Fulton Street Garage (504-566-1010). I told them we were doing the Park and Cruise Special through the Holiday Inn and asked how it would work if we decided to park there the night we stayed. They told me it would be $12 for the night (paid up front). There is no “come and go”. If you leave and come back it’s another $12. I was told that the morning we leave (Sunday) we would have to come back to the garage with our voucher from the hotel so we would receive credit for the 7 days. I don’t think they are going to object if you want to park your vehicle there. It sounds like they do “over-flow” parking for the Holiday Inn, since they have limited spots. If you are not staying at the Holiday Inn or not using a Park and Cruise special then I would assume that you would just have to pay for the 8 days in advance. I would call them to make sure.

Ask then about the shuttle also – but I would think if you are paying for parking in their garage during the cruise then they should have no objections.

I assume you are at the Marriott on Canal Street? Great location to venture into the French Quarter.

I would just park at the Marriott the night before, then move the car the next day to Fulton Sreet Garage. It is perhaps a 10 block walk between the two. A taxi will cost you $7pp from the hotel to the dock. If you are going to walk from the Marriott to Fulton garage, you might as well walk to the ship - the garage is a block or so out of the way.

Depending on traffic, I might drop the luggage off at the cruise ship and then park the car at Fulton. Depending on heat, I might walk or catch the shuttle.

I've never seen them check people getting on the shuttles - but if there is more than one ship in port, get on the right shuttle - ask - they could all look the same.

Thanks Cheryl. I'll call to make sure - I appreciate you giving me the phone number. I have been looking for it on the web all morning but couldn't find it.

Pam

I looked everywhere myself - finally gave up and called the hotel. They had it handy. I'm going to be sure and put it in my file.

Thanks Zydecocruiser. How far is the parking garage from the FQ? I figured we would just park the car there once we get checked in and take a cab to the dock. Marriott charges $24.00 + tax to park so the difference will just about pay for the cab.

After driving there from Memphis, a good walk would probably do us some good!

Thanks for the urls too. I guess that explains why I could never find a number for it :)

That is an option. It is about 9 blocks to Canal Street and the start of the French Quarter. Not a bad walk unless it pouring.

What I don't know is if you have to move your car the next day and purchase a parking ticket for the week or if you can do that when you park the car the first time. You might want to call and ask them about that.

Yet another option - I THINK they still do it - is do you plan on making a deposit at Harrah's? Parking was free in their garage if you were a member of their Frequent Loser club and gambled for 1/2 hour and would be a few blocks closer. You would still need to move the vehicle the next day, but the first night might be free (or very expensive ).

I have the worst luck in the casinos out of everyone I know (or have ever heard of). I love NO so I think a walk back to the FQ would be great. We can always rest in Pat O'Brien's :D

Are you originally from NO? You are so knowledgeable about the city !

Hi. I'm planning a Sept. trip to NO as a land trip between cruises this year. What are the top thing to see and/or do in NO besides the FQ? Food is important as well as beaches and of course an evening of blues or jazz has to be included. Going to spend about 4 days in NO area and then drive along the Gulf towards Fla. We like to scuba and snorkel so can you suggest any places along the Gulf that would be suited for that? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
