Transport from Civitavecchia to Ciampino airport

My daughter and I will be debarking RCCL Jewel of the Seas on July 2 2017. We'll be on deck 4 and I plan to request the earliest departure on the first day and we will only have carryon luggage. Our flight departs CIA for KRK at 1:10PM. That is a Shengen flight, so in theory we should only need to arrive two hours early.

Is it reasonable to think we can make that flight by taking the train to Termini, and the train back to CIA? I prefer the cost of public transportation, but I will hire a private driver in lieu of having unnecessary stress.

The train doesn't go to Ciampino airport but rather to the town, it's more direct to take a bus from Termini to the airport.

The bus takes 45 minutes to get to the airport, to add some "pad" for safety I'd want to be on a bus from Termini no later than 10 AM. You have three operators to choose from:

Sitbus: http://www.sitbusshuttle.com/en/ciampino/

Terravision: http://www.terravision.eu/airport_services.html

Schiaffini: http://www.romeairportbus.com/itinerari/?___store=default_en&___from_store=default

In order to catch one of these buses at 10-ish, you need to arrive to Termini no later than 9:30 because the regional train tracks from Civitavecchia are three blocks away from the main part of the station and Via Marsala, where the buses depart.

Therefore, looking at the train schedule, the last train I'd want to be on would be 7:58 from Civitavecchia, arriving at 9:18.

At the Civitavecchia end you need to allow an hour for the port shuttle from the ship and the local bus to the train station (or walking the one mile from the port shuttle drop off point).

Therefore, if you are confident that you can be off the ship by 7 AM this plan sounds solid to me.

Yes, I've read elsewhere that we'd need to take a bus from the CIA train station to the airport; that was their recommended route but it may have been for cost instead of speed.

I don't have confidence that we can be off the ship by 7AM, only because of unforeseen delays that are out of our control. I've read elsewhere that if the ship docks on time at 5AM, and if there aren't excessive delays with customs, then we should be off the ship by 7AM. If there aren't unforeseen health issues, we could probably walk the mile from port to the train station, but if that doesn't help us catch an earlier train then I'd just as soon not walk.

Someone in another thread here posted that took the train/bus route last year and if they had to do again a private transfer would have been preferred. Although that would put us at CIA airport much earlier than necessary... unless we chose to eat breakfast on the ship and opt for getting off the ship a little later.

My first priority is not missing the flight, but I wouldn't mind eating breakfast before debarking. The Windjammer Café opens the continental breakfast at 6:30AM but there's no telling how long the lines will be.

I've never sailed with RC so I don't know if this is possible, but several times on HAL cruises we've had breakfast in the dining room while everyone else raced to get off the ship, then got off around 9 AM or so with no crowds. If that's possible on RC you'd have plenty of time with a private transfer to do so.

Regarding whether or not to try the train, there are always taxis at the port that you could hire to take you to Ciampino, so that would be a fallback option if you decide to try the train but can't get off early enough.

I've used this company, very good value for money, highly recommended. I've checked the rates: shared shuttle - 100 Euro for 2 persons, private - 119 Euro from port to CIA.

personally i wouldn't chance it either. Last year on a cruise, everyone that was on the train into Rome did not make it due to issues. I would take a transfer. Get some estimates from some companies recommended on the board. I can personally recommend Joe Bananas. They offer excursions/tours but also transfers. Good Luck!!

I received a quote from Joe Bananas @ 160€, I've seen others lower. I haven't looked real hard yet, but the service Dani recommended above was 100€ (shared) or 120€ (private).

Here's an option @ 85€ for a shared shuttle: http://www.romecabsbooking.com/shuttle.html

And one for 110€ with a private car: http://www.romeshuttlelimousine.com/?portfolio=transfers-to-and-from-the-port-of-civitavecchia
