We will be sailing on the Royal Princess this December. My husband is recently disabled and will require a mobility device to get around. I heard about mobility scooter rentals and would like to ask if anyone has used a company that rents them to you and delivers it to your stateroom? It sounds really convenient to me. Any pros and cons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

A friend of mine who I frequently cruise with did this(although I was not on the trip she used the scooter-heard all about it) She thought it was wonderful.:) She broke her knee.

Call your travel agent or Princess -they have a company(s) that do all the arranging for you. It will be onboard waiting in or near your stateroom.

You can use the Princess wheelchairs(dock staff will escort you) on embarkation/disembarkation.

If you tender in any ports you may not be able to take the scooter, if you dock should not be a problem unless your tour if you have a bus doesn't have a place to store the scooter.

Sue,

We were upgraded on the Royal to a handicapped accessible cabin. I can tell you it had lots of room especially in the bathroom. If you don't already have an accessible cabin you might want to followup on this. For safety reasons, Scooters and mobility devices are not permitted to be left in the halls when not being used or overnight, so the wider cabin would make it so much easier to store it and maneuver. Good luck and enjoy your cruise. We loved the Royal.

One Scooter rental company is “CareVacation” their phone number is 1-877-478-7827, their web-site is http://WWW.CareVacation.com . Remember you either need a narrow scooter, to fit through a standard door, or you’ll need a handicap cabin. ;)

I have rented from them numerous times.

One thing that has been brought up in other threads regarding this very issue is to rent a scooter before you cruise so hubby can get used to maneuvering it. A crowded ship is not the place to learn how to drive a scooter. Your hubby, as well as the other pax would appreciate this.

Just adding my agreement with others who have suggested an accessible cabin. We have not yet sailed on Princess with rented a scooter (first time coming up in Jan), but have numberous times on RCI. You'll need a slim scooter, or an accessible cabin with a wider door. So be mindful of the measurements when making your arrangements. I also agree that there really isn't adequate space in a standard cabin to store the scooter and they wont allow you to leave it outside in the hallway. We have rented from both companies already mentioned -- Care Vacatsions twice, both times there were mix-ups... not happy, it really impacted my grandmothers vacation. Subsequent rentals from Special Needs at Sea, no problems. This is just OUR experience.

Have u checked with ur insurance to see if ur husband can get a chair or scooter?? My husband has a power chair as he is disabled & has trouble walking. They paid for it in full.

When I rented a scooter from Special Needs at Sea they were very accommodating. You should know they asked my weight and what HAL ship and what cabin category I was in so that they could tell what width scooter would fit thru the cabin door. The scooter was in the cabin when I arrived and we were instructed to leave it there upon debarkation. I thought the cost for a two week cruise was the best value ever! I highly recommend calling yourself to discuss your DH's scooter needs. As I recall, I needed to give them a credit card over the phone and I'm thinking that it was non-cancellable. They can tell you all that when you call.

If your DH has never driven a scooter, take him to WalMart or a similar store with scooters and let him test drive one. They are huge compared to what you will rent. If he can handle one of those, driving the smaller rentals will be very easy. Our Lowe's and Home Depot have huge ones also if he wants to drive around there. My DH wanted to push me all over the ship and ports in a wheelchair. I went ahead and rented the scooter instead. DH was very happy when he saw the freedom it gave me on the ship!

These are great on the ship and the rental companies are very efficient at this.

My only extra advice than you have already received here is to talk to your cruise lines's special needs department to ask which company they are currently using for mobility rentals.

Have a wonderful cruise.

Mobility scooters are rented based on the weight and height of the end user. Therefore a slimmer portable scooter that can fit through the doorway of most standard cabins may not always be an option and the individual may have to rent a full size scooter which will require having an accessible scooter. Both Special Needs at Sea and CareVacations will not rent a scooter that is not appropriate to the end users weight and height.

NCL only allows Special Needs at Seas

Most all other cruise line allow both Carevations and Special Needs at Seas.

I have purchased a Lexis Light fold up scooter (50 lbs) that goes right on the airplane as carry on luggage. (It does not count as a carry on because it is considered medical equipment...like a CPAP machine). I ride it to the gate (does away with waiting for the "trolley" or a wheelchair), my husband folds it up in about 5 seconds, we put the "travel cover" on it and store it in the overhead bin. It is 18"x22" so fits like a carry on. When we deplane, my husband pushes one button, adds the lithium battery and it is ready to go. We often arrive late at night when the "tolleys" are not running but there is never a problem getting to baggage claim (which always seems to be miles away!) because I ride the scooter. Fits nicely under the bed or wherever you store your luggage on the ship. Another benefit I found is that we now "grab and go" with it at home rather than load the "big scooter" (150 lbs). I still like the larger scooter for around the neighborhood and at a nearby theme park that is VERY hilly. But, for traveling, it's the Lexis Light all the way. :)
