PASSPORT STAMP from Monaco to Nice

I didn't see this posted...is your passport stamped or checked when traveling from Monaco to Nice and back via bus?

I went by limo, but we didn't even know when we crossed the border. So I doubt it very much!

Per the Schengen accord travel from most W. European nations to another is without any border control. One can go from Denmark to Greece without crossing a border control (unless of course going through the former Yugoslav countries)

While Monaco is not technically part of Schengen, it has an agreement with France not to have border controls.

So, no, you do not get a passport stamp when crossing the border.

If you really want a stamp, you can go to the tourism office that is just at the other end of the gardens at the Monte Carlo Casino. I googled for Monte Carlo Passport Stamp and this thread was one of the top search results. Does anyone know if this is still the case? That the tourism office at the gardens by the Casino can stamp your passport?

You will not even be able to find any official when going between France and Monaco. For purposes of travel it is almost like Monaco is simply part of France. When we drive between these countries there is no border control and its similar to going between states in the USA. Trains and buses also routinely move between the countries with no border controls (you will not even know when you have crossed the border)

Monaco is so tied to France that

1) the chief administrator is always a French civil servant

2) If the ruling Grimalds dies without a legal heir, the territory reverts to France

Keep in mind though, that in theory passports can be checked whe crossing the border between Schengen countries. While in reality this does not happen very often, it's still a good idea to bring a passport whe crossing the border.

Hate to disagree with a European...but there is essentially no border between Monaco and France. In fact, its hard to even see a marker when driving between these countries and there is no kind of train stop at the border (not sure the train drivers even know where there is a border).

That being said, one reason (we think about the only reason) to carry a Passport into Monaco is if one wants to visit the Casino.

What you say is true but only for countries that had border controls pre-Schengen as the states reserve the right to temporarily reinstate border controls. These pocket entities -- Monaco in France and Vatican and San Marino within Italy -- never had border controls. Not sure how Llivia was connected to Spain pre Schengen, or Liechtenstein to its neighbours.

If France ever wanted to institute a border check with Monaco they would first have to build some small buildings for the border check staff, add a coffee shop for their frequent union imposed breaks, provide some bedrooms so they can take their daily naps, etc. And they would also have to establish a new city to house the bureaucracy (this is actually a French word) to determine how to build the little buildings, do the environmental studies, negotiate with all the various labor unions, etc. So, given the history of France we can anticipate this would take at least a decade before they would even have the ability to do border checks :). And one could anticipate that after doing all this planning their border control employees would decide to go on strike the very day the new service is to be implemented.

RJH, I'm sorry you found the post offensive, but having read many of Hank's very helpful replies here on CC this past few years it's clear to me that he's a real Francophile and I'm sure no offence was intended.
