I haven't been on the boards in a long time. I haven't been on a cruise in a long time!

Finally found what I've been looking for for so long....

7 night

So. Caribbean

Balcony

Sailing solo

$789 + 45.54

$100 onboard credit

(Serenade, April 14)

My first cruise in over a decade. I'm not sure I remember how! :D

Hi. Yes, that's a very good price for solo, but how much is the airfare to PR?

Well, I suspected airfare would be a problem (expensive). But I've spent ten years looking for a single/balcony at a "doable" price. (You can find my posts on this subject much earlier in this thread.) This is the first one I have ever found -- so I grabbed it while the grabbing was good. (There were only two balcony cabins left. I took one and within a few minutes the other one was booked as well.)

Airfare was around $600 ($690 on choiceair). Too much! After many hours of searching I booked the best deal I could find: frequent flyer miles Las Vegas to Tampa then AirTran to San Juan ($200). Not ideal but worth the $$ savings.

My sig (for the next 20 days):

It's been so long since I last cruised I've forgotten how!

Admittedly, I am a disorganized, single guy. I feel the same way about shopping as I do about packing: I hate them both!

When I last cruised, long ago, paying to check luggage was unheard of. I use to pack everything -- including a kitchen sink! Times have changed.

I'm trying to figure out if it is possible to pack for a 7 night cruise taking nothing larger than a carrry-on sized suitcase. Obviously I wouldn't take my snorkeling gear (or a kitchen sink!). Also, taking a suit and dress shoes, etc., would be, questionably, a no-no. (I am not exactly a gregarious person -- so I may or may not miss going to dinner on formal nights.)

Since I am flying two different airlines the cost of checking a suitcase would be double.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and packing tips.

You would be surprise with how much you can pack in the following manner

Put your shirt flat in your suitcase with the top in the suitcase and the tail sticking out over the edge. The next shirt put the top in the suitcase, but on the side that the first shirt is hanging over the edge. Then on the end of the suitcase do each end the same way....after getting 2 or 3 layers of doing this, gather up all the ones hanging over the sides of the case and "fold" into the case....it will look like a "cube" then continue with the next group. I would suggest putting shoes and stuff in a bag and put on top of last "cube".....I could not believe what I actually got into the suitcase packing this way....good luck

You can slide by on formal night with dress pants, shirt and tie.

There is a laundry on board which is way cheaper than the extra bag. ;)

Hope this helps!

I've done cruises with just carryon. You do not need nearly as many clothes as you think, if you plan for laundry on board. Don't forget to plan for toiletries that won't go in carryon. I wear a jacket travelling, not that many ships are rigorous about formal night. I also get dress shoes (actually dance shoes, in my case) packed.

Ditto on packing light for a 7 night cruise.

I am going on a 14 night transatlantic from Barcelona to New Orleans in November with a week in France pre-cruise. I plan to pack 3 weeks of clothes in one checked bag and a carryon bag. Admittedly my personal bag will be large enough to hold a lot of clothes, too - especially things like undies, bathing suit, socks, etc.

When my son got married a couple of years ago, his best man flew in for the wedding and only brought a carry on bag. He put his suit in one of those space bags that you squeeze the air out of, and then just took the suit out as soon as he got there to let it dewrinkle.

Don't know far in advance everyone is looking, but I found a pretty good single supplement for my Celebrity Summit cruise. It was under $900 for an inside for a 7 night Southern Caribbean sailing. It leaves from San Juan with 1 sea day and 5 stops.

Haven't checked today, but yesterday studios on the Epic for April 7th (next Saturday) were going for $899. Not a great deal normally but it is a holiday week so for that week its a great deal. When I signed up 2 months ago it was $1149. Its great for solo teachers who can only travel when schools are closed - only issue would be getting a flight to Miami - as its only a week away and flights are extremely expensive that week. But if you live somewhere close enough where you can drive.... Cruise stops at St Maarten, St Thomas and Nassau.

The more I've been following this board recently the more I like the deal I booked (post #1567).

It took me ten years to find but now that I know it's possible I'll be spending the next ten years looking for a similar deal: balcony/solo/$100 a night. If you hear of one let me know! :D

I read all of these posts and get so frustrated. While it's true there are occasional good solo deals for an OV or Balcony, almost everyone is posting Interior cabin deals out of necessity because of the cost.

I will give up a balcony - I am giving up idea of a balcony for an OV on next fall's TA - but I just don't think I could handle an Inside cabin no matter its cost. I know this is iMHO and others are okay just to be on the sea. Still it is a shame this is the only option for a lot of people.

Well, rant over.

Scotland, I don't know if your post was directed at my last post or not (guys, use the "quote" function), but I'll reply/rant nonetheless. (Cover your ears if you don't want to hear this 10 year long rant!)

<begin rant>

I fell in love with cruising some 15 years ago. When I fell in love with cruising I also discovered this Cruisecritic.com website and, specifically, as a single guy, this "solo" message board.

Just a recap.... cruisinryan started this thread on 9/27/08. His first line in opening this thread read (I quote) "A thread for single supplement/solo bargains is very helpful for solo cruisers." Please note the word bargains. I suppose the term "bargain" means different things to different folks.

As I have posted, to me a bargain is a balcony cabin/booked solo/at less than $100/day. Now, to me, THAT is a rare find. Some inside cabin at $500+ is NOT. Am I wrong?

Am I too cynical, critical, too unrealistic? Please be honest. Perhaps it's time to start another "solo bargain" thread?? Your thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks for listening.

<end of rant>

Sorry if I offended you by posting my info about the solo inside cabin. I thought we were all posting what we felt were good deals. Personally, since the cruise started at more than twice the price when it was first released, I felt it was a good deal. I'd rather cruise in an inside cabin and cruise more often, than cruise in an OV or balcony. I don't spend that much time in my cabin anyway. Would I rather have a balcony?, sure I would. But, then I would rather have won the mega millions last night instead of only $5.

Rant reply over.

Hi Pat:)......from what I have read on the news there are now

3 states with winners.....

I would rather cruise more often too:D.....I have been quite

lucky lately....2 out of my last 3 cruises were balconies and the

one we sailed (almost a year ago already:eek:) that was a window.

While the OV & Balconies are nice, I can't justify the (normally high) extra cost.

I'm either on deck ... and there are some very quiet ones ... or involved in one of the many on-board activities ... or in port!

The only time I miss OV or Balcony is when I'm getting dressed for the day, but the cabin TVs have weather reports and (at least) the newer ships have deck cams.

I'll cruise 4 times this year. Actually, 5 times in a one-year period. (The first 2 in January 2012 were back-to-back 5 & 6-day cruises because that was cheaper than a 7-day in that time frame!)

All of those cabins are interior rate.

You do the math...

Fort Lauderdale CCL Freedom 8N March 24 $866.72 1A GTY Solo Total

Hi just booked this... $758 Solo 1A Gty Rm + $108.72 T&F= $866.72

Opportunity just opened up and I called for IS. Was told this was available; will be my first time trying a 1A but should be fine with me; I'm an old tent camper,ha!

Well I was given an Accessible Room on Deck 7 all the way Forward, quiet, nice, obst window onto front deck. My first time totally solo... On the first night I was shown to a table by myself on second floor. I felt like a goldfish in a bowl. I went to Maitre D and was given a table with 4 couples. A bit better but was somewhat uncomfortable, they were traveling 4 & 4. However I enjoyed myself the rest of the time. I am outgoing so I had a good time and would do it again. Met a couple who are on cruises 8 mos of the year and learned a lot from them. Was very relaxing. Thanks for all the information on this thread I have learned a lot from you all.
