didn't have a specialty dining room

didn't own most of their own ships, they leased them or if owned, they were old and not particularly nice.

forced us to dress up at least a couple of times on every cruise

had the envalopes for tipping, making us struggle to make sure we had the right change for each person.

didn't offer any activities for children and teens

all cabins were smoking and often had a tobacco odor.

The one thing I do miss: the horse races. That was a fun time and why they did away with them I don't know?

I miss the original Cagneys fries (before 2010 and the change) most.

I miss the drink fish bowl and the cheap sparking wine during embarkation.

Most of all I miss the inexpensive meals in the specialty restaurants when there were no cut backs in appetizers, ingredients, or other stuff. Some of my best meals ever in Cagneys in 2009 for only $20

I miss those suite GIANT fuzzy beach towels too and those 2 liters of spring water you would get ;)

AGREE!!

I also remember when they were all good!!

And much more expensive. We sailed on the Fair Princess, which was the old Sitmar Fairsea, from LA to Mexico over 25 years ago in an ocean view cabin and the fare was almost as much as we paid for our first suite on the Jewel several years ago.

Remember when they would walk around the MDR and sell the single red roses? LOL

Ships had no balcony cabins, it was ocean-view/porthole and insides only.

Free hot breakfast room service.

Smoking was allowed everywhere.

Cruises were generally longer as the ships weren't as powerful.

Ships dumped their trash directly into the sea.

Some ships had dining rooms with no windows - not even portholes.

Stateroom were generally smaller, and the beds uncomfortable.

Entertainment would include some big names, although at the time some may have been on the rise.

There were a lot fewer cruise ships to choose from, which lead to...

Cruise prices were much much higher compared to the cost-of-living at the time.

There was really only one dining room, and everyone would eat there every evening.

I also remember a good mortgage rate was 17%

A pack of cigarettes were $1.50

Two slices and a coke $1.00

Movies were $2.00

A gallon of gas was .89 cents

I remember when a new PC cost about $2,500

Things change, life goes on...

I remember when cigarettes were $ .50 a pack. Gas was $ .31 a gallon, my new 1968 Volkswagen Bug was less than $2,000 and my salary back then was 1,900 a year and I could never afford to go on a cruise. Edited by NLH Arizona

Your cabin steward was on duty all day. Great martini glasses for sale. Collins glasses with the ships hull art on them. Golf pro on almost all the ships. Having to wear life jackets muster drill. All rooms had bar soap, mouthwash and lotion. Booking onboard at discounted rates. Crepes and Caesar salad prepared at the table.

Yes, I remember the Tee Shirts and bought them. They were "Dive In," tees with the ship's name printed across the back. Wish they'd sell them again.

Remember the NCL Majesty served Charleston SC - Bermuda cruises continuously and would dock in St. Georges. It went thru the "town cut", which was a fun experience, Bermudians and the town crier would wave to the cruisers on the ship.

Ah memory lane. Love going down this street. So many changes over the years. Skeet shooting. Now that was fun. I miss the real cappuccino, real hot chocolate, the real teas and yes the wooden box coz it made me feel special when they brought it over. I remember my first cruise where they gave everyone confetti to throw at sailaway. The real Cagney fries. Yes they were the best. As I was reading these posts it is amazing I remember all of these things. Ceasar salad made tableside. Going to LeBistro and when they brought your dinner over they brought it covered and opened it with "Voila". I remember when LeBistro was the only specialty restaurant and if my memory serves me correctly it was 5.00 to go. I could go on & on. I will continue to enjoy reading this thread. Thank you OP for bringing me down memory lane.
