Norwegian Cruise Line Bans Smoking on Balconies

Observation: Been going to the same neighborhood pub for 21 yrs now along with many of our close friends. We live in a state that still allows smoking in any establishment as long as noone under 18 is allowed. Indeed, many of our friends smoked in their 30s (I have never smoked), now we are all in our 50s/60s - most have quit smoking - sadly my DH is not one of them :( - But over half of the young people now coming into the pub do smoke - not just because smoking is allowed - but because they started in high school. While the perception is that many folks have quit and for my friends it's absolutely true - I see a significant number of kids in their 20s smoking - and they don't think twice if where they are at requires them to go outside or whether they can stay inside - neither requirement seems overly onerous since it's their normal as it's always been that way since they started... only us older people remember when people smoked in their workplace etc etc... just my observation - so yes - hotels, ships, casinos are reducing places one can smoke - I am just not sure the perception that smoking is going the way of the dodo bird anytime soon... I also observed this on our recent trip to the Med - smoking was common place at all of the outdoor seating we visited - seemly without all the hub bub seen here in the states and at least for our group - not a problem.[/QUOTE]


I will agree with you there


We have a lot of young folks at work (20s , early 30s and good number of them smoke )

Just about to hit the jackpot.

Going to reserve the GV and offer smokers access to the sun deck for $5 / pop.

Will only need 2000 visits over the 7 days (about 30 / hour during day time), to fully pay for my suite. Shouldn't on average by more than 5 people at a time (ish)

Lol! You could also charge for hot tub, sundeck and steam room access too. Have your butler deliver drinks and collect the cash. Better yet, get a Square for your iPhone and just swipe everyone's card upon entry so they have an open tab to enjoy the "spa services for a nominal charge" as well. You'll really clean up if they all have an open tab. Put some private cabanas up on the sun deck-- charge an exclusive fee for those too. Haha!

I'm not a smoker but I'm glad some people are finally having a sense of humor about all this.

I just confirmed this on NCL's website (was afraid it was too good to be true). I am doing a happy dance right now! Just wish it was starting before our Jade cruise in Venice this September but SO happy it will be in effect on the Getaway in Feb. 2015 and our Iberian Peninsula cruise out of the UK in October next year! Way to go NCL!!!

I am also doing the Happy Dance because I will be sailing on the Getaway on Sept. 27th and my 14th deck balcony will be full of Marlboro plumes in honor of those smokers sailing after Nov. 1st!!!

Nope.

Any rights/privileges taken away from anyone bugs me. Most all of the arguments proffered by the virulent anti-smokers are at best uninformed. Much like many things in our society people have become go along to along to get along. People put too much credence in other peoples "opinions" without educating themselves.

But I don't think it's an [I]opinion[/I] we're discussing. I think the smell of smoke [B]really[/B] bothers some people who should have the God-given right to breathe fresh air.

I wouldn't suggest getting into the [I]education[/I] part, if I were you. The studies, reports, tests, articles ALL claim that secondhand smoke is dangerous. I think knowing the dangers and trying to avoid them makes us educated. Edited July 20, 2014 by JulieAF

This is exactly why we are getting to be a dumber society and dumb species will eventually get wiped out ... thats nature selection! When made up statements and science are given equal weightage and equal platforms the louder uninformed voice wins out.

So, if the decision is nased on dollars (insurance/revisions to balconies) you are happy for NCL, in order to let smokers retain the priviledge, pass on the exorbinant costs to EVERYONE? Yeah, right.

Sometime devisions are made that have more that seen to the eye.
