Viking River Boats Upper deck?

When we were on a Danube cruise with Viking in April the upper deck was open when cruising. There were loads of people sunbathing up there. I imagine there must have been a particular reason why it wasn't open on your cruise. Did you ask the crew for an explanation?

They will always close when going thru the locks......sure it is for safety of passengers! Once it is a while for when locks are not an issue .....it was opened up again! Bad weather will have it closed down too.

Not always closed going thru locks. We were on the Sun deck while going thru the Iron Gate in Eastern Europe in June, and while going thru locks at night in Holland in '12. We were on the Hermod for the Portraits of Southern France in March, and, yes, the Sun deck was closed during sailing, as we were crossing under many low bridges. That was the reason given. The bridge even had to be lowered at times for clearance. But, the Aquavit Terrace was open for those who wished to enjoy the open air.

It may depend on theCaptain and the instructions he has from the cruise line. The upper deck was almost always open during our cruise, on another line, on the Danube and Main-Danube canal.

On a couple of occasions, going under bridges, the Captain required everyone to stay seated and face forward and on one occasion he required anyone who could not get their entire body below the level of the tables to get off the top deck.
