I wonder how this is going to compare to specialty dinning. However, some of the restaurants will be complementary.

Enjoy

Just another "innovation" by RCCL that is nothing but a copy of what NCL already does. It won't be long till they start putting Hull Art on their ships...

The discussions on the RCI board are interesting. There are people questioning how the tips will get divided if they don't have the same server every night. I thought to myself, now where have I seen this discussion before? :)

It's definitely not the same as NCL. Similar in some regards, but not the same. 4 different main dining rooms each with a diverse menu are included. That is not true of NCL. Also the buffet is being upgraded to 24/7 as well as breakfast any time too.

It remains to be seen if the Pub fare will be included like on NCL (and is a big hit) or if it will be for an upcharge. It is listed as an upcharge place but that may be for the drinks only with food included or a la carte pricing.

I think it takes some of the better parts of NCL's ideas and puts unique spins on it.

Competition breeds innovation; everyone wins.

Very interesting . . . thanks for posting. "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" NCL has a winning formula and it seems some of the other cruise lines are beginning to transform to "Freestyle light."

Looks like I could now cruise a Quantum Class ship.

I thought the same. I was thinking of Quantum for my next cruise but was unsure how I would feel about traditional dining and formal nights as I so loved NCLs casual atmosphere. Now it seems RCI is going Freestyle with their newest ships. Or "dynamic". Whatever. And it's leaving from the NYC area? As soon as the price is right, sign me up!

I can only sail in the summer or during breaks since my kids are in HS and college but I plan on being on the Quantum summer of 2016! We have been sailing NCL the last few years but will return back to RCCL on Quantum. And, sailing out of Bayonne is a huge plus!

However, on RCI's all-things-Quantum website, they have a new video promoting Dynamic Dining wherein they constantly mention that this is completely unprecedented "in the cruise segment." (presumably of the travel industry). What they really mean is that this is completely unprecedented for RCI. Obviously they are borrowing Norwegian's Epic and Breakaway-class formula. Too bad they cannot quite acknowledge the fact. :p

So, this is similar to Savor, Taste, Manhattan, O'Sheehans, Garden and Freestyle, etc.

I didn't watch the whole thing. Looks like RCCL is trying to copy what NCL has been doing.

Correct me if I am wrong; but don't the free dining rooms on NCL, regardless of name or theme, all serve the same menu, and it is all traditional MDR wedding banquet style fare?

The 4/5 unique free dining venues on Quantum each has their own distinct menu like a specialty restaurant would.

No....each of NCL's MDR's (Mid and Aft) has its own distinct fixed menu. Addtionally, they are specials offered that change each day. This is none on a 14-day rotation, but is currently being upgraded to a 21-day rotation, so you would have to eat in the same MDR for 22 straight days before you would see a menu repeat.

RCCL's copy has each of their 4/5 MDRs using one menu each and every night.

Not really the same thing.

Re-reading my question I see it can be taken multiple ways.

I know NCL's menus rotate daily. So I guess my question is; even though there are multiple locations, on say, Day 1, they both have the same menu (dining room A and dining room B) then on Day 2 it is a different menu, but the only difference in dining room A or B is decor.

So regardless of if you go mid or aft, it's the same menu as the other MDR.

The special of the night menu are normally the same but the fixed every day menu is different in the 2 mdr one example you can get a ribeye everyday in one mdr the other mdr has a NY strip.. thats just 1 example

Does anyone remember what Vegas was like before all the newer casinos with roller coasters and celebrity chef restaurants? You could actually afford to eat there. I see this as the beginning of Royal making all of these restaurants pay venues leaving very little for the masses who are used to just going to the dining room. Hopefully I'm wrong. I like the all inclusive model of cruising.

NCL has never copied any other cruise line, huh?

In fact, I remember when NCL failed miserably on their attempt to copy RCI's ice skating rink. Lucky for them, their copies of Quest, the Married/Not Married show and reservations for shows have been successful for them.

All the cruise lines copy each other's successes, right down to ship names. Looking at this Dynamic Dining thing, I see a combination of NCL and Disney in it. And mark my words...it won't be long before NCL offers a bigger variety in free dining to answer it.

They didn't copy RCCL's ice rink - they had an "ice" skating experience but no ice was involved. In fact, it was even outside in the tropical sun and some poor person from the activities staff had to put it together each day and sit there by themselves. The actual ice skating on RCCL isn't very popular either, but since they do actual ice shows with professionals that are, it justifies keeping the ice rink. I did take my ice skates and skated twice, just so I could say I've ice skated on a ship.

I have had a browse around their website and it looks like an interesting and tempting concept (the huge ships puts me off however). My take is that they have examined NCL's model closely and have tweaked it (and maybe improved on it in some ways).

NCL - if you are following these threads (which you should be) - please note that their 'pub' is offering a range of craft beers. This would be an easy option for NCL to include in O'Sheehans - no rebuilding costs - just some shelf space and a menu reprint.

The discussions over on the RCI board are quite entertaining. On the one hand we have the 'harbingers of doom': moving towards all fee dining/declining standards of service etc.. Others are saying that it looks interesting to have the choice.

I can see the arguments now about 'how formal is their formal restaurant' (Grande). Pages on whether pre-made bow ties are allowed...

Let's be honest here, ok? You know darn well the person I was addressing would call it copying if NCL had an ice rink before RCI did. Come on. You know it's true.

To be clear, I don't see copying as a bad thing. All the cruise lines watch each other's successes and then build on them. Hotels do it, airlines do it, car companies do it, and so do cruise lines. You can't tell me NCL didn't put that faux ice rink on Epic for any other reason than to copy RCI.

Having the good fortune to sail many different lines, I like perusing the different threads of other lines, too.

RCCL threads aren't overwhelmed by this news. One person called it another move to "become an amusement park on water". More than a few are stating they won't cruise RCCL again with the end of traditional dining.

To me, that's all a bit dramatic. But, it does point to the rigidness of their customer base being so resistent to try something new.
