Default Non refundable amount.

Non refundable amount.

When you buy insurance and it ask for cruise cost do you put in the total spent or the cost of the cruise.
I have never included pre paid tips, Obc, Port taxes, as I assumed they would be paid back from the cruise line. Is my thinking correct or have I under insured myself.

But I kind of have the same question as Base 5...

Why would you insure the port taxes? If something happened & you missed, or had to cancel the cruise, wouldn't your port taxes be refunded from the cruise line? So the port tax expense is not at risk, and doesn't need to be insured... Right???

Similar question on airline taxes & fees. There's no need to include those charges in your travel insurance valuation, right? If you don't fly, those fees would be refunded, right? Therefore, not at risk...

Any insurance experts care to weight in?

With my cruise line they roll everything into one price so I just insured the total price ...however I upgraded the airline seats the day before we were to fly out & did not up the insurance ( never thought at the point I was NOT going)

So hopefully it will balance out close to the insured amount in the end

I had to file a claim 2 years ago. We never made it onto the cruise. I had to send in all recepits for payments made prior to leaving to include air, etc. The receipts had to show a zero balance. The insurance company contacted the cruise line to determine what port fees would be refunded and then paid the balance of the claim. Some cruise lines charge for shore excursions as soon as you book and others not until you are on the ship. If you have already been charged the I would add that amount to the total for your insurance.

I had to send in the CC statements showing payments & also the port fees that were refunded were on the last one so now it is a waiting game
Keeping my fingers crossed & we get a refund

...to answer my own earlier question about insuring the port taxes:

I've since read here about the risk if your cruise is interrupted (rather than cancelled). If interrupted (for medical or other reasons), you'd be charged the port taxes for those ports you'd visited, but refunded the port taxes for any ports you'd missed.

Anybody have an answer re: airline taxes & fees? Should they be insured?

Usually if you are not on the ship ...returned home before the end of cruise the port fees are refunded

If you have non refundable air tickets I would insure the whole thing

I would rather over insure the few $$ for taxes ...insurance costs are not that much more to include them

Yes, but then I realized, "WHAT IF YOU LEAVE THE CRUISE HALF-WAY THROUGH?" Due to some emergency or other... In that situation, you'd have to pay some of the port fees, and would likely have the un-visited port's fees refunded. Right???

So.... Better to insure the port fees. I think...

You'd best double-check that with your cruise line. In my experience (and it's been a number of year since I sold a cruise) the taxes/fees are not refundable if you leave the cruise early. But I could be wrong on that.
