Seems like whoever does it does predict higher than average. Covering their butt I'm sure.

Cruised the fall three times without any problems. Also if there is a storm the ship diverts.

Go have fun, don't worry be happy

Actually the referenced news story is much more than just "covering their butt".

Dr. William Gray is the expert on Atlantic hurricanes. He puts out several statements each year, one early like today's, and usually a mid-season update. His track record is quite remarkable.

BTW, it is correct that they have been predicting a higher number than average for the past few years. According to Dr. Gray, we are in a several-decade long pattern of increased tropical storm activity.

You can read his releases here:

P.S. You will note from my sig that I have only cruised during hurricane season! I'm batting .500. Diverted once, to perfect weather on "the other side", then perfect weather on the planned route the second time!

They are predicting 14 named storms this year with 13 being the average. They are also predicting 3 will make landfall in the U.S. with 2 being the average. Not really that much higher than normal.

I wish I could bring myself to book a cruise during hurricane season, but I've been on two cruises years ago during that season and NEVER again - I'm too chicken and get too seasick.

Yes, ships do divert to miss the worst of the storm, but a major hurricane anywhere in the Caribbean is sort of like having a power mixer someplace in a bowl of cream.
Hurricanes can be very large storms producing rough seas, high winds and rain many miles away from the eye. The weather channel identifies the eye location as the location of the storm. Hurricane force winds reach out for miles in every direction. Beyond that there are gale force winds. Tornados are possible even beyond that.
The Atlantic hurricane season extends from June 1 through November 30. That is HALF of the year! Odds are on that you will have great weather, but hurricanes influence Caribbean weather every summer and early fall. I often take cruises during hurricane season for many reasons. Our encounter with Pauline (Pacific hurricane we went through on Ryndam) did not ruin our cruise. It was a great adventure.

Now that is truly harder to predict than the number of hurricanes expected.

Yes, from what you read about Grand Cayman, you can miss that port due to rough seas any time of the year! I think if I really wanted to make sure I got to Grand Cayman, I'd take a plane!

Having lived on the Gulf Coast all but 10 years of my life, and having been born in the middle of tropical storm Cindy,I have always been fascinated by them. But September is still my favorite time to cruise.
Last year we were in KeY West, and on the Western route, when A very strong Isabel skirted the Caribbean, then tore up the East coast.Never had wave action over 8 ft.

Just plan to fly out a day earlier and also keep a keen eye out for incoming storms before your flights... I know that American Airlines will allow you to go out a day or two before your scheduled day if there's a storm coming in w/o charging a fee.... something to keep in mind.

If there is cruise insurance that covers bad weather, please share where to get it. Cancelling for a hurricane is generally not covered.

This was the number 10 reason to buy trip insurance by a complany named Travel Guard

10. You are at a beach resort in North Carolina, and you are forced to evacuate due to an approaching hurricane. Who will help you evacuate and who will reimburse your lost vacation?

I though that I had read in my insurance information that it did cover cancellations due to weather.
