Is there a "jail" on cruise ships?

Given some recent illegal activities on ships, I just wondered if there is actually a "jail" on board....a confined, secured space in the event someone needs real confinement while at sea until he/she can be transferred to authorities.

Inquiring minds want to know..... :)

The morgue on certain ships holds 2, and the larger ones hold 5.

We were on one cruise where they had to clean out the meat freezer, as they had run out of room in the morgue!

And, yes, there is a brig, but the company does not like to discuss it, and I have seen the morgue, but not the brig.

True story: we were on the April'07 TransAtlantic, the Serenade. A 30ish young man was gambling alot, maxing out his card, I beleive $2500/day; our friend wouldn't play blckjack at same table cause he was rude to the dealer. About the 5-6th day he was again rude to a young lady dealer, accused her of cheating, demanded the supervisor, then told that person he was too lowly! It was like it a bad movie! By now he was quietly loosly surrounded by 5 security guys who on this trip had been hired out of so. africa & were big & strong. He started cussing them & refused to go with them, then all of a sudden the young man cold-cocked one of the security guys. Then the security guys just all grabbed him & gently (unbelievably) put him onthe ground, then cuffed him & took him to the brig where he stayed for 2 days until we reached the Azores at which time he was escorted off the ship & he & his bags were put in a cab. There is soooo much more to the story but it was quite the casino action! Anyone else on that trip?

Yes and a morgue also

....and coffins.

I have been told I would be surprised how often they are used.

3 1/2 years ago while Jim and I were cruising (and getting married in Alaska on the Radiance), a co-worker lost her husband to a heart attack on a beautiful beach in Bermuda. Royal Caribbean produced some angels who took very good care of the family on the return trip and stepped in to expedite arrangements. They even comped $700 in phone charges.

We did the Behind the Fun tour on Carnival and got to see their brig. It was a padded room; padded so no one can hurt themselves in there. Right next to it was two cold "drawers" for the deceased. There are many very interesting things below decks. We ended that tour on the bridge with the captain, which was the highlight of the entire cruise for me.

Does Royal offer any excursion like this? I believe it was $100/pp and limited to 16 people and no photography except those taken by the ships photographer.

I've never seen Royal offer any pay tours like this. Sometimes high-ranking C&A members can get bridge tours or the like.

A padded room makes perfect sence, when I think of a jail, I visualize a bar caged type setting.

  • 1 year later...
On a ship, it's called the brig. Yes, they have one.

It would make for a great impromptu Lounger entertainment night. If anyone gets sent to the brig, the captain gets on the intercom and announces, "Q & A with an Idiot in the Maharajas Lounge." The jailed cruiser, hopefully a teenager, gets rolled into the lounge in a cage and people just ask questions of, mock and lob insults at him/her for an hour. I'd love it!!! :D
