NCL changes smoking policy too!

Recommended Posts

Just received this in my E-mail. It was sent to all travel agents. I figured it would just be a matter of time before they followed suit with everyone else.

Discuss!!:p

As the health and well–being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014. The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas.

You had to know it would happen. Just think what the ships would be like if all the smokers that left Celebrity, RCCl and Carnival showed up on NCL. The non smokers would all go to the other lines and NCL would lose a lot of business. There is no easy solution but once RCCL changed their policy it was only a matter of time before all the others would have to follow suit.

Should I act surprised?

Let me try.....

Nope, not surprised.

You'll see this on all mass market cruise lines. Carnival will probably be the next domino to fall. Someone will post a quote about some Carnival executive saying, "We won't change our policy", and then get mad when they follow suit.

The world is changing. They can't perceivably ban smoking, but they can sure make it a chore to do so!

I'll go get the popcorn.

I believe Carnival has already banned smoking on balconies. To my knowledge, Holland America is the only mass market line remaining that allows smoking on balconies.

I like the verbage in that one about PLAYERS in the casino. Hopefully that cuts down on the newest indoor smoking lounge trend.

I like that as well. Guessing we'll be seeing RCI figuring out they're losing casino business due to excess smoking. They already lost mine and I can play a slot machine for hours.

Time to sit back and enjoy the 500 comment long thread this will create which devolves into a pointless back and forth between those who think they can smoke whenever and wherever they like and those who loathe anyone who smokes.

That being said, I applaud the decision. Smoking is a legitimate fire hazard on cruise ships and is a potential danger to everyone there. Let smokers have their designated area up on deck.

I don't mind second hand smoke, but it reaches a point of being a little ridiculous. When it starts to leach out into other areas of the ship, its time to revisit the policy or revamp the ventilation system. I applaud the cruiselines for making the move, but they do need to give smokers a warm comfortable area that they can go to.

No....its been discussed and argued to death. This thread is completely unnceccssary...and in the wrong section. This is RCCL...not NCL.

I disagree. I am wondering how many old Royal cruisers who "jumped ship" over to NCL will now be back.

It certainly levels the playing field amongst the mass market cruise lines. So while the announcement itself does not mention Royal. IMO it definitely does impact them.

And I wonder just how many smokers who claimed they were jumping to NCL or another line actually followed through on their threat. With the percentage of smokers declining year after year, just how much impact would such an action actually have? It seems obvious that the growing number of lines who have increased their restrictions on smoking, concluded that they could still exist and make a profit by doing so.

I find this amusing because of the number of idiots that seem to have booked NCL cruises following the carnival announcement.

There were a large number of Carnival cruisers who were absolutly sure that NCL was going to be their smoking haven. They deluded themselves to believe NCL would love having their business. Several us predicted NCL would also soon ban balcony smoking. Of course we had no idea soon be only eight days after Carnival! More smokers is not who they want to book!

Penny slots--one penny at a time, very slowly (lol)

At least NCL addressed the e-cig issue. Inferred it was o.k. on your balcony but not in non-smoking public areas because people think they are regular cigarettes.

Who cares? Another thread about smoking on a different cruise line that will probably go over 100 posts on the RCCL boards......... We don't cruise NCL or smoke, but I think just for grins if I was on NCL I'd stand by a slot machine pretending to play and have a cigarette.:)

The smokers will probably jump to HAL next. I am very surprised they have not followed suit and prohibited smoking on their balconies.

Heard via a LONG grapevine, HAL is going to follow NCL banning balcony smokers!!! very soon. Watch for it people....;)

I did not see where it inferred E-cigs on balcony was OK. I thought it said no cigarettes, e-cigs, etc.

Thanks

That is correct, they're treating E-cigs as if they were actual cigarettes.
