Going to Key West, Nassau and Freeport and my wife just tore the meniscus in her knee. We will be renting a scooter and was hoping someone might know if there are any excursion that will allow her to take scooter with her. She can walk short distances, 50 - 100 yards but would like to have access to the scooter if needed. ANYHELP WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

In Nassau the vans at the transportation center all have seats all the way to the back and no sedan cars. Thus will not accommodate a scooter or w/c. As a scooter user, we discovered Gerard who has accessible transport. He's terrific and can be contacted at gerardblewis@hotmail.com. Don't forget that b. you pay for accessibility but to me it is safe and I am doing what I can while there.

My favorite time is to go to Atlantis Hotel and be picked up a few hours later. There you can roam the casino, indoor shops, buy a "pass/wristband" to "The Dig" (hotel's 2 part aquarium) at the front desk and roam the Marina area (shop and eateries below) ...ramp past staircase). It makes for a nice day.

If you do email Gerard...tell him NY Minute said hi.

As far as Freeport (Carnival port?) there is some shopping at the port (vendors) but taxis will take you to the town which is larger. There's a casino, pool, real shopping and restaurants there.

Enjoy, make the most of the scooter.."it is what it is". Vicki

Have you checked with the cruise line's Special Needs Dept. as often there are accessible tours offered but since but do come at a hefty cost ?

Key West is part of the USA and ADA Law does apply unlike Nassau and Freeport

Do you have an accessible cabin? You must store the scooter in the cabin, and most cabin doors are not wide enough for the scooter to enter, and there is not space inside to maneuver. I note you are sailing May 8...A collapsible wheelchair might be your better option if you do not have an accessible cabin. EM

I don't have any idea of the size of the scooter but in Nassau we did a taxi tour with a taxi driver/guide by the name of Hilgrove Hall (aka "Sir Speedy") who had a van. We shared the van with 2 other couples and Hilgrove was great a great guide. You can reach him thru is daughter's email at bianca.hall@hotmail.com If you gave her the dimensions and weight of the scooter he would likely get back to you as to whether he could accommodate the scooter.

Unless the individual requires the weight capacity of a full size scooter or bariatric scooter than the standard Pride GoGo Elite Traveler HD or that Pride GoGo Sport which are the models that both http://www.Carevacations.com and http://www.SpecialNeedsatSea.com rent will fit through a standard cabin cruise door. However the arms rest may need to be adjusted or completely removed.

Though a standard cabin can pose some challenges maneuvering a mobility scooter inside the room it's doable as I've done it many times. Therefore an accessible cabin is NOT always required as long as the overall width of the scooter is 21" or less such as that of the Pride GoGo Elite Traveler HD or Pride GoGo Sport.

For Key West, I would just get off the ship and wander around. It is a very small place. The conch trail will take the scooter. It will also hold the scooter for you while you tour around.

In Nassau, it all depends on how large the scooter is. Because I can get up and transfer, we were able to take a little ferry over to Paradise Island and they just put the scooter in the back. Then I scooted up to Atlantis and spent the day.

We are cruising to Key West with my mother that also has a torn meniscus. We rented a electric car to drive around in. They will pick us up at the port.

Hi, all- I'm on the Royal Princess in November with my Mother that utilizes a wheelchair. Princess does not offer any excursions for wheelchairs in the cities above. Can anyone recommend a tour company in any of the places above? My Mom can walk up a few steps if needed, but needs the wheelchair for more than a few steps.

Thanks in advance,

Gail

I found Princess' Access Office a bit hit and miss, but you might be able to find out who the tour operators are and either request further details through the access office or by contacting the tour operators yourself. Tour desk staff on ship were marvelous though...we'd a few things we wanted to do so spoke to them on first day, they communicated with each tour operator to let us know details on things like terrain, vehicles used, and made sure our guides in each place knew I had my chair and might need a bit of extra assistance (which was happily given wherever we went)

On Aruba we just normally take a bus out to my favourite snorkel beach, however if mom can handle a few steps up into the bus Princess used to offer a very 'easy' coach tour that involved virtually no walking.

On Grenada, try Mandoo at http://grenadatours.com Mandoo is a very special guy, his mini-bus will handle a wheelchair and his tour is about 90% accessible.

On Bonaire look no further than http://m.bonairevistatours.com/Home.html They have a mini bus that is easy in and out, a folded wheelchair will go in the back and the tour is about 95% accessible.
