Perth Post-cruise

We are on a Sydney-Perth cruise next year and are trying to decide whether to take an 11:30pm flight out on the day of disembarkation or an early morning flight the next day.

What have others chosen and why. One dilemma to taking the late night flight is what to do with our luggage during the day unless we decide to rent a car.

If we stay in Perth is there a particular area you would recommend?

I live in Perth, happy to advise

What time of the year?

What are your interests?

King's Park is one that everyone enjoys, but there are lots of options

It would be a pity to miss out after coming all this way

I am interested too.

We will arrive in Perth 20 Feb 2014. The plan is to stay over the weekend and fly out late Sunday night, direct to Auckland.

Accommodation - we need wheelchair accessible, and room with walk-in shower.

Activities - we are open to ideas. Obviously being in a wheelchair, I won't be bungy jumping! ;)

Keep in mind cruiseships leave from Fremantle not actually Perth.

Freo is, I'd say an hour or so taxi ride, but you catch bus or train.

We generally stay at what was Burswood International Hotel or the Holiday Inn (At the same location, as they are one of the closest 'nice' accommodation to the airports (domestic and international).

Have a great cruise and stay in Perth and/or Fremantle

Get yourself a hotel in Perth Centre - do the Perth Mint - see a gold pour - have yourself a momento minted - all that will take a couple of hours - stroll the shopping malls - catch the tram and go round Kings Park. Take a Swan Wineries cruise from the fore shore - that will certainly take care of a half a day. There is quite a distance between places in Perth - and I love the brochures that advertise the Pinnacles, and the Cervantes and all these other places as though they are "up the road" Technically they are - like 2 hours each way - and more - though it is one road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Miss a turn - and you could be in Darwin - 4,000 something kms away  (Only joking) Stay local - relax - enjoy - don't try and cram too much in.

I forgot to add - that there is a storage place in the Perth Train Station Complex for luggage it is called: http://www.cityofperth.wa.gov.au/web/Living/Community-Services-and-Facilities/Citiplace-Rest-Centre/ check the web site.

Also, if you were to stay in Fremantle - a previous posted mentioned that there was luggage storage at the Maritime Museum: http://museum.wa.gov.au/museums/maritime

To catch the train into Perth - just look right as you cross over the bridge from the passenger terminal - you will see the train station about 500 metre's on your right - this takes you right into the Perth City Train Station Complex

MargoK

If you can give me any idea of budget, interests etc I'd love to help

Accommodation in Perth/ Freo is quite expensive due to the mining boom

I agree with suggestions above re Swan Valley Wine Cruise and / or King's Park

Swimming with wild dolphins at Rockingham is wonderful if your disability allows

To add to Dizzy's excellent suggestions, the train journey into Perth is quite scenic as it goes along the harbour and beaches, and takes 20-30 mins

King's Park is one that everyone enjoys, but there are lots of options

Thank you for your offer of advice.

We will be arriving on Monday, March 3, 2013. We enjoy beautiful, natural scenery.

Although I enjoy shopping, I prefer to spend my time in Australia doing something I can't do here at home. That said, I love artwork and jewelry. If there is a good area to shop for reasonable pieces and it is near other points of interest, I would be interested in knowing that.

We have no qualms renting a car and driving.

I love the ocean/beaches (maybe because I am from landlocked Missouri)

We enjoy good food - I like seafood and all types of ethnic food. Husband especially likes lamb and steak.

We like museums and also like to walk in picturesque areas/neighborhoods.

As far as hotel, we are staying at a Marriott in Sydney - something of the sort would be great. We normally prefer a hotel in town rather than an airport location.

Many thanks for your (and everyone else's assistance)!

Thanks for the details

I would hire a car in Freo (?Avis?) and drive north along the beaches to Cottesloe Beach for a walk/paddle swim as preferred. Unfortunately you will just miss the annual Sculpture by the sea exhibition which starts Friday 7th March this year, but some of the larger sculptures might be setting up in preparation. Its still great without, and I would reccomend the Blue duck overlooking the beach in North Cottesloe for coffee or lunch.

Next I would drive to King's park, park near the War memorial and walk down to it for a great view over Perth & the Swan River. I would then turn right & walk through the Botanical gardens to the Millenium Bridge, over that then back through the Pioneeer women's graden's & Banksia Gradens

You'll learn a lot about the trees etc as well as aboriginal & western history

If you decide to stay overnight I would avoid the city centre (overpriced, no parking, full of Oil & Gas executives) and stay at the Crown Metropol (Formerly Intercontinental Burswood) or Crown Promenade (formerly Holiday Inn Burswood)

They lie on the Riverbank opposite the city centre with great views (nad a wonderful pool at the Metropol. The complex includes may of the best restaurants in Perth including Nobu and Rockpool (fro your husband the steak lover- pricy but worth it) It also has theatres, casino spa etc but also great riverside walks/cycles.

But you wont get full advantage if you leave early Tues am. Can you not get the 11.30pm flight Tues night so that you have 2 full days in Perth?

We did three days pre-cruise in Perth and loved it.

I highly recommend Miss Mauds Hotel. The hotel is downtown, but walking distance from the river port where you can walk to take river excursions.

Miss Mauds has a wonderful restaurant with a smorgasbord. The food is excellent. The hotel is not luxury, but comfortable.

Take a river cruise down river to Freemantle that includes a trolley tour and the HoHo bus of Perth. Then take the upriver wine cruise.

Thanks for all of the great suggestions everyone. We have definitely decided to stay the night and have booked flights. Unfortunately, we can only swing the one night as my husband will probably have to take some time off without pay as it is since he does not have much vacation accrued at work. One of these days we will have more time on our hands, but for now we feel lucky to be able to have the flexibility at work to go on the cruise (which will be our longest yet).

You will be here for Sculpture by the sea at Cottesloe, I rccomend it highly

You will not be able to get close up to all the sculptures in your wheelchair as about half are set in the sand, but you will get good views of them from the pathways.

Kings park is also a must

After that it depends on your interests, let me know and I'm happy to help

The red eye flight from Perth to the east coast only gives you about four hours sleep, not much fun. For picturesque neighbourhoods there is the swan river cruise that goes past some of the most expensive neighbourhoods in Australia or take a meal in subiaco near the city. If you have a car Whiteman park is very good, it has art and craft studios, birds of prey show, a few nature walks. http://Www.whitemanpark.com.au. We really like the art studio there. Not bad for wheelchairs with a lot of paths. http://www.whitemanpark.com.au/facilities/disabledaccess.aspx. Ramps to all shops and facilities and a dedicated train carriage for the tourist train ride and they have two wheelchairs they loan out.

Thank you for your info. Will pass on the Sculpture by the sea to those on our cruise - sounds interesting.

Interests - we are both mad keen on motorsport (may be tempted to go back to NZ via Adelaide for the Clipsal 500) and car museums.

Accommodation - you have suggested avoiding the city centre, try the Riverbank with nice restaurants. That sounds appealing.

How is the public transport for wheelchair users?

Public transport is mainly very accessible but there are a few exceptions such as old heritage train stations

I would recommend looking at the Transperth website

Transperth.wa.gov.au

for more specific details, they are very helpful

Unfutrunateley Car museums are not really my thing, I hear there is a good one out at York but I don't know if its worth a trip out there just for that

Would you be interested in the Maritime museums in Freo, their ships range from pirates/ mutineers/ shipwrecks from 17th century to warships, submarines & Americas cup winners from the 20 th

Hopefully someone else can be more helpful on that

Definitely enquire with Crown about their accessible rooms but rates may well fal nearer the time

I had read elsewhere about the Maritime Museum and that will be a definite starter for us. I will look into the Crown.

I will be staying at the Pan Pacific Hotel for 2 nights 7th and 8th Nov before boarding ROTS on the 9th. I am flying from Glasgow via Dubai and will not arrive until around 6pm on the 7th so will not be venturing very far that night. I would however love some info on restaurants for my evening meal on the 8th. As I am travelling solo I do not want to be wandering to far from my hotel at night. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Perth in summer means beautiful beach views and walks. I live in Perth but have stayed here-

http://www.stayz.com.au/accommodation/wa/perth/north-beach/68807

because the view is so peaceful and beautiful and it's a great place to unwind - especially after a cruise. Doesn't suit the folk needing wheelchair access as it is upstairs but for other the hosts were lovely and the view to die for.
