Note: To Chair Hogs

Recommended Posts

I don't usually care much for sitting near the pool, but enjoy the Serenity area on Carnival. Since we will be on RCL (Monarch of the Seas) for the first time next month, is there an Adults only area or a suggested "quieter" area to find a lounge chair to sit back, relax and read?

BTW, Serenity area on Carnival is also full of chair hogs who drop off their things to hold a chair for the day ..... even before the area is officially open!

On my next cruise I'm not packing anything to read. I'm getting up in the morning to borrow something from the pool chairs. I will return it to the lost and found at the end of our cruise. Thanks in advance for sharing:D.
If you were a giving and caring person, you'd take that book home with you and donate it to a library or senior center:rolleyes:;). Come to think of it, Goodwill takes all kinds of clothes and beach towels:D

I think it's comical that the chair hogs never seem to have any kind of rebuttal. There are flamers on here in every single thread but never once do you see a chair hog say "stuff it".

I'd think that nobody thinks that THEY are a Chair Hog.... it's those other people, I was only going to lunch really quick, and stopped at the Casino for just a little while, I was right back..... but the people next to me ... jheesh, what a Chair Hog.

Yes, on Royal it's called the Solarium. And they have chair hogs also. They are everywhere:rolleyes:

There is the solarium which is on deck 10 , forward. It too will be full of empty chairs with various "stuff" occupying them. Have a great cruise.

I need to know this because ever single cruise I go to, I end up sitting too far away to see my kid swim. I am so afraid of being a hog that I dont want to put anything down and go to the bathroom or the WJ for fear of looking like a heal. BUT when I come back from breakfast (not long) everything is gone. Whats a girl to do?

So, I am going on my first RCCL cruise this summer

Define a chair hog for me so I can recognize them :)

Are they the ones who put their towel on a chair then leave while I am watching my son at the pool and I have no place to sit and read because there are towels sitting in the chairs?

That is exactly what a chair hog is. You'll see towels in chairs and the chairs folded over with no one in sight!

I was on one cruise where it wasn't a problem - Oasis. The pool attendants literally had little signs with clocks on them that they would put on peoples' belongings - sort of like how a parking enforcement officer will chalk your tires, then come back two hours later and write you a ticket. In this case, people had 30 minutes to get back to their chairs or their belongings were removed. It worked out very, very well. 6,400 passengers on the ship and there were always empty chairs.

On Liberty and Navigator last month I would sit in a less desirable chair and read my book while waiting on people to return to their 'saved' chairs. I usually gave it about an hour, then simply folded their belongings up inside their towel and walked it over to a pool attendant with a simple "I found this". Never had an issue, and I was never challenged by anyone when they returned and saw me laying there.

Sorry, but Grammytan was talking about the Monarch. There is no solarium on that petite and gentle elderly lady....though there are some nice quiet areas away from the crowds at the pool on the upper decks that we like. Have never, ever had a problem finding an empty chair in those areas.

Enjoy your cruise! :)

Donating the books is a really good idea. I was going to rip the last page of the book out when I returned it to lost and found (sorry chair hogs.....I can be inconsiderate too:D).

I'm an early riser (usually before sunrise). I get a kick out of watching the people in pajamas (and worse) and squinty eyes walking up to the chairs to mark their territory. It's so fun and easy to just wait for them to get back on the elevator and free up those spots. :D Too bad I'm usually off doing other things and don't get to see their reactions when they finally show up. :p I'm sure some other hog has taken their spots by then.

Ditto that it is funny to watch. ;)

We usually do our coffee walk early. One morning we were in the Viking crown lounge and walked over to look out over the pool deck. Was hilarious to see the little hoggies in their jammies looking bleary eyed as one by one they ventured to root out and "stake their claim". They could not see us watching them due to the glare on the glass up there.

They would place their stuff (towels and paperbacks mostly) on 3-4 chairs, then fold the backs over where they had marked their territory. We took bets on how many would walk off...stop to sniff the air...look back...come back and rearrange the chairs just a few inches...and sometimes do it all over again before they walked off the third time, carefully looking around for other hogs in their territory as they left.

Then there were the "appointed hog guards". These were the unfortunate swine selected to sit and guard the 3-4 or more chairs while another of the group brought them a plate of breakfast and then left him there. (Guessing the rest of the swine's group were enjoying breakfast together in the MD or WJ).

Kind of like watching one of those wildlife shows on TV. Those hogs are territorial for sure!! :D :D

We just got off Oasis and one day when we were at sea, we were walking on deck 16, pretty much the top deck, and several people had put stuff down. We stopped at a table to feed our son and it was so windy, I was sure their things were going to blow away.

I know it is terrible to say, but I was secretly hoping they would, too funny!

NOTE to those people: Those chairs are not even that desirable, no need to save them!

I am so glad to hear this:D! We did a Princes cruise once and no one enforced the adult only pool rules, the attendants just walked by ignoring everyone and it was mayhem (kids leaping from the second story into the pool:eek:) If you are going to have rules enforce them! I especially feel for young families who need to be within sight and possibly a few steps of their little ones. At the kids pool, they should reserve those close chairs for parents of tots. Just like they should enforce the adults only rule in the Solarium. (which we have found they do on Royal)

We have moved towels from multiple chairs to one of the chairs and sat in the other two if we have noticed no one coming back to them. Again we've been and gone before they ever:rolleyes: come back, but if they ever:rolleyes:showed up, I would just say' Oh Im sorry, I thought those chairs were open since no one was using them, your towels are just over there" and then NOT MOVE!

My little "Chair Hog Book Story"...

CCL Miracle, 8am DH and I are on the back pool deck (adult only, I dont recall the name) looking for 2 lounge chairs, we finally find 2 together, closest to the rail. We make ourselves comfortable. Next to me are 2 lounge chairs that look like they are being held together, t shirts over the head and books on the seat. Next to DH is 4 chairs looking like they are being held (errrr, hogged) together. Around 9:45-10am, as our kids come find us, a lady shows up next to DH (hogging the 4 chairs), she asks if we need one, we said sure, thanks and she went on to give up 2 to our kids. She stayed about 30 minutes and left with all her stuff. Guess she didnt really need ANY of those chairs that bad. The morning continues on, no one shows up next to me, people walk by asking, I told them I hadnt seen anyone all day. No one took their chairs . I really wanted to read the book that was saving the chair next to me, (Blink by Malcolm Gladwell) so at around 1pm when it down poured and every one ran for cover, the chair hog lost their book!!!!!!!! LMAO

Remind me not to leave my Color Kindle out on my chair! Kidding, I wouldn't do it, and I love chair hog threads. Beats working!
