My DW and I were in Curacao on a Sun Cruise (6-17 Mar 2014) and reserved a rental car from Avis. When we went to pick the car up at Avis was a hand written note stating "No cars". I thought to myself "thank God I made a reservation". Once inside the rude etc clerk said "No Cars". I insisted I had a reservation to no avail. I even asked if she could get a car from the airport. No Deal. We left and close to the ship found a man from Angel Tours. We went with them for an island tour. Went to the Hato caves etc. Nice tour, cost 20 dollars pp. Highly recommend them.

I don't recommend renting from Avis at the pier. We waited for an hour b4 we gave up and booked a tour.

We had reservation at the rental agency in the hotel near the pier but cancelled that b/c we did the dive at sea aquarium so I can't report on the expediency.

They drive on the same side as the US.

Haven't noticed any comments on refilling the gas at the end of your rental, other than to expect to pay cash. Can anyone give me an idea where to top off the gas tank prior to returning the car? Also, about how much did you pay after a full day of touring? Trying to get an idea of costs and how much cash to take off the ship for our day. Thanks!

We have used Avis 3 times now and drove up to Playa Porto Marie the last couple years. We spent $15 I think and filled just north of the pier. Getting to the gas station was a bit tricky. I am trying to rent from somewhere other than Avis this year because they are a bit shady every year. Last year they did not have the car size we requested so we paid for an SUV as that was all that was left and then we were charged $20 after we returned home even though we filled the tank. I would take pictures of the car when it is dropped off because more than likely nobody will be there to check you in. In 3 years we have never had someone there to check us in when we return the car to the pier.

We rented last March and it was the best decision. We drove to Playa Lagun - very easy to find and drive. We also stopped at the grocery store on the way to get a case of Amstel Light for the beach (drinking on the beach is legal). I rented a van and 10 of us went.

Playa Lagun was awesome- well worth the money. Great snorkeling from the beach.

Just past the pier at the Renaissance Curacao Resort and Casino they have a budget rental car. We just stumbled into it there was no line, only took maybe 10 minuets to get the car. I think it was 80 bucks for the whole day and we were able to drop it off after hours just had to leave the key at the front desk. We really enjoyed driving around found lots of small beaches and a few had some pretty good snorkeling. Only problem was we couldn't find a gas station that would accept Visa or MasterCard so I returned the car with out filling it up that charge for that was very minimal, if I remember correctly it was under 20 dollars. After we dropped the car we walked over the floating bridge grabbed some drinks and hung out until it was tome to get back on board.

We just rented a car on March 5, 2015 from Avis (on line) with pick up at the pier.

I was nervous because of the posts above. But No Worries. We were upgraded. They were incredibly efficient and friendly. Cost for the day including insurance and tax: $80 for a car that accommodated 5. Great roads. We drove through the charming town and then out to the west. Dramatic scenery on the north side and flamingos and salt flats on the south west. A great way to see the island. Ask for directions to the gas station. We had a little trouble finding the one near the pier. It is across the road fro Denny's.

We will be in port from 1pm to 11pm and were thinking of renting a car from Avis. We wanted to see the following Otrobanda, Queen Juliana Bridge, The Floating Market, Punda, Scharloo and Queen Emma Pontoon Floating Bridge

before driving to Knip Beach, Boka Tabla Cave/Shete Boka National Park, and Porto Marie Beach.

Wanted to know if after getting car from Avis at 1pm, can we leave the car in the Avis parking lot so we can walk around the town and then take car to drive around island? Or is there a place to park? How long would it take to see the places downtown? If we waited to see the places downtown after visiting Knip Beachm Boka Tabla and Porto Marie Beach, it will be dark out.

I rented a car from Avis from 1pm to 10 and here is what I learned.

1. Avis only had cars for people who had reservations. Walk ups were sent to the Renaissance hotel down the block. I don't know exactly where it is located.

2. Need to get off the ship early because you can take up to an hour to get the car. I was 2nd in line and we took 30min.

3. Plan on taking longer to get where you are going as we had to back track a couple of times.

4. We went to Jerimie beach and then to little knip which is on the west side of the island and took 45 min to get there. Both beaches were very nice.

5. We wanted to leave the beach before dark so we left around 5:30. We ended up following a tour bus back to town, we figured he was going that way. He ended up making a turn off the hwy and we started to panic but we figured he was making a tourist stop and he did, he took us to a flamingo park which was a bonus.

6. We arrived to the rental place around 6:30 and asked security if we can park and leave again and he said yes.

7. We planned on eating dinner and then heading out again with the car but ran late and just walked to the platoon bridge.

8. Avis said that they close at 5pm and to leave the keys in the glove box and lock the doors only problem was that our car had push start and the doors will not lock if key is in the car so we left the car open as well as another couple. We did take pictures that the car was there at night.

This is all I have. Good Luck.

Haven't checked this thread for awhile. When we rented at the Howard Johnson, the clerk arrived a little late and it took quite awhile to get the car. When we returned around 3 pm, no one was there and we had to leave the keys with the guy at the hotel desk. We took lots of pictures of the car and had no problems but not ideal. If you need a car early, this is not the place to rent since they don't open until around 9 am, I think. It's a short walk from either pier and it was cheaper than renting at the pier. Not sure if you can return the car after they close--I think it was 5 pm.

Driving is on the right side of the road.
