Serenade of the Seas to Alaska

This was our second voyage on Serenade. The first was May 2005 to Hawai'i. We left Vancouver BC on August 27, 2006 and headed north to The Hubbard Glacier. The Captian got Serenade to within 1200 feet of the face of the glacier.

From there it was south to Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It was really different to wake up and have land on both sides of the ship as we sailed the passage!

On the way back to Vancouver Captain George brought Serenade to a full stop for about an hour so that we could enjoy the antics of no less than three pods of Orcas.

Hope you enjoy our video.

Hi Golfer!

Thanks for having a look at our slideshow. It was, next to Hawai'i our favorite cruise so far. And, oddly enough, both journeys were on Serenade.

As for the port vs starboard I really think that it's a toss up. We had an ocean view on the starboard side of Serenade. It was great to wake up and see land a few hundred yards away. Once up on deck - it was the same for passengers on the port side.

At one point we didn't know where to go!! The scenery was so inspiring on both sides of the ship.

We were travelling with friends from Utah we met on a cruise four years ago and have stayed in touch. Heading in to Hubbard we "staked a claim" forward on deck 12 near the stairs down to deck 11. We were there well in advance of the approach into Yakutat Bay and Disenchantment Bay. It seemed to afford some shelter from the winds - or a little more than the heli-pad on deck 5.

Have a great trip and thanks again.

Good Evening P&B

When we decided on this voyage my wife was not all that keen on Alaska either. Once we boarded Serenade and headed out it was a whole different story.

It is so unusual to see land close by on both sides of the ship as you navigate the Inside Passage. The scenery is just amazing!!

We had a beautiful sunny day when we sailed in to the Hubbard Glacier.

We took a walking tour of Skagway (overcast and 55F), a helitour and walk on the Mendenhall Glacier - an amazing experience - in the rain in Juneau (rain and 55F) and walked about Ketchikan on our own (cloudy, showers and, you guessed it, 55F). Our planned Ketchikan tour was cancelled due to high winds and rough seas. We were disappointed but we respected the tour operator and RCL for their decision.

If your wife likes to shop, in the words of Lu-Ann, the shopping in Alaska was even better than in the Caribbean!!

Work on that good lady of yours. Alaska truely is a GREAT destinaton. We are planning a return with different ports of call!

Thanks for taking some of your time to watch our slide show. Glad you enjoyed it.
