Tauranga to Hobbiton by rental car

Hi,

We plan to visit Hobbiton from Tauranga. There are 2 options, join a tour, or rent a car.

I see the car rental depot is about 5KM from the port. What are our options to get there (besides walking for 50 min, which is fine for us as we walk a lot).

Also, is it scenic from Tauranga to Hobbiton? The reason why we want to rent a car is, we can stop to take pictures, and maybe also visit the hot spring.

Thanks,

April

If the rental car company can't pick you up at the dock, then just get a taxi there.

It is a scenic trip as the route takes you over the Kaimai Ranges. Great views of the Waikato as you're going to Hobbiton. You'll also go through some very pretty farming country.

Make sure you book your Hobbiton Tour. It could get busy when a cruise ship is at Tauranga. Also ensure you visit the Matamata township.

we did this when we were in Tauranga, we hired from rite price rentals and they had a shuttle bus that took us to the depot. The drive was scenic enough, and we stopped at a waterfall on the way home. We didn't end up stopping at any thermal areas as we were exhausted after Hobbiton but we would have had the time for a quick look.

Jacs,

Have you made reservation ahead of time, or pick up the car at the pier?

Thanks,

April
