What's in Picton?

Picton, Ontario? Picton, New Zealand? Picton, New South Wales? Picton, Western Australia? Picton, Yorkshire?

It will be raining. Or it will be sunny. Or windy. Probably dark, after sunset.

Picton NZ I expect.

Friends went on a lovely little wildlife cruise.

We just wandered around the quaint little township.

Well you can eliminate two of those since the OP posted in the Australia/NZ Ports of Call forum.

Picton WA is a suburb on Bunbury so it's unlikely to be that one.

Picton NSW - if a cruise ship can dock there then most of Australia has disappeared underwater.

I guess that leaves Picton, NZ.

But your weather prediction is probably dead-on. :D However it won't be dark immediately after sunset, it will be twilight.

Dont forget that Picton..NZ.. is the main entry point to the South Island for those travelling across Cook Strait by ferry. and as such hundreds pass through each day, thousands in the summer season , so its Main Street can and does support a great selection of galleries art and souvenir shops...perhaps the best collection of genuine souvenirs in the country.

We went on the mail boat around Queen Charlotte Sound. It is a beautiful scenic area! We had a 20 minute stop at Ship Cove and explored the beach where we saw the memorial to Captain Cook and several large Maori wood statues. The tour gives you a glimpse into remote areas around the Marlborough Sounds. Highly recommend the tour.

Sea kayaking is another option. We did this during our last cruise that stopped in Picton. It was a lovely day but it's a fair bit of physical effort to sea kayak for half a day. We did our tour through this company:

Well worth booking directly with them instead of doing the same through the cruise line for almost twice the price.

trabeler, thanks.

We are doing the half day kayaking (via Shoretripsandtours.com out of NZ) trip in early February while in Picton. Shoretripsandtours use Marlborough Sounds for kayaking (@about $68USD pp).

How did you get to the Picton Waterfront office of Marlborough Sounds?

We were on the Diamond Princess and they had a shuttle from the pier - no one was allowed to walk from the pier into town. The shuttle dropped off about a 5 minute walk from their office. We had the morning trip (departs at 9 am) and our ship arrived at 8 am... we left the ship around 8 am and arrived at their office around 8:30 am.

We emailed them at adventure@marlboroughsounds.co.nz and they sent a little map showing where the shuttle drops you off and where their office is located.
